Bernina Express from Milan in one day

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Tharani is planning a 5-day trip to Italy and wants to know if they can take the Bernina Express from Milan on the 4th day. They are traveling with a 3-year-old and are concerned about fitting this excursion into a single day before returning to Bergamo for their flight.

Key takeaways:
  • Book a day trip that includes transportation to make your Bernina Express experience smoother and easier with a child.
  • Spending around 1.5 hours in St. Moritz will give you enough time to explore the town, so plan your itinerary accordingly.
  • Avoid attempting the full Bernina line from Tirano to Chur in one day as it's too much for a single trip back to Milan.

    Hi all,

We have planned for a 5 day trip to Italy and our 4th day we are in Milan. Is is possible for us to get a ride in Bernina express from Milan to have a look around switzerland? We are a family of 3 including our 3 yeard child.

Will it be advisable to cover it in a day and come back to Milan the same evening as we have our return flight from Bergamo?

    Thanks

    Hi Tharani,

One day is quite tight but not impossible. If you’re keen to see the Bernina line I would give it a go. You could do it on your own, but perhaps the easiest option in this case is to book a day trip which includes all transportation. Please see http://www.viator.com/tours/M ilan/Swiss-Alps-Bernina-Express-Rail-Tour-from-Milan/ for details. It includes a coach ride to Tirano, the Bernina Express to St. Moritz, 1.5 hours in town (enough for a walk around the lake or a visit to the town center), and a coach ride back to Milan. It gets good reviews.

The full line from Tirano to Chur would be too much for one day if you need to return to Milan, but the above trip is a long but doable day.
