Bernina Express timetable & Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

Debbie B needs to travel from Tirano to St. Moritz in August and is unsure about booking her tickets on the Bernina Express. She is also having trouble finding the timetable and wants to know if she can book her tickets only 90 days in advance, as she plans to use a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • You can check the Bernina Express timetable and make reservations online; remember, reservations are mandatory for the BEX, and you can book only 90 days before traveling.
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass, you can travel freely on local trains in the Graubünden region, but you must still reserve seats on the Bernina Express.
  • For easier planning, use the SBB Timetable to find train times and stops, as local trains may offer more flexibility for hiking trips.

    Hello Debbie,

You can find the Bernina Express timetable and make reservations at http://www.rhb.ch/en/panorami c-trains/bernina-express#info.

You can also use the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. The BEX is denoted “PE” for Panoramic Express on that timetable.

With a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price) you don’t need a ticket for either regular trains or the BEX. But for the BEX a reservation is mandatory. You will only be able to reserve seats on the BEX from 90 days out from your travel date.

You don’t need to book in advance for the Bernina railway. Just get on at Tirano, your STP is valid for unlimited travel on the RhB railway. The journey takes about 2 hours.

A bit of background for your to help in understanding what I’ve just written:

You do not have to travel on the Bernina Express, any local/regional train is free to board in Graubünden canton (the canton is covered by the network of metre-gauge Rhaetian Railway (RhB). if you have the right valid pass. If you are accessing hiking opportunities, local trains are better, the Bernina Express (and Glacier Express) are aimed (mainly) at non-European tourists travelling the whole way on the train on a tight ‘package’ itinerary.

It is important to understand the difference between the ‘Bernina Express’ and the ‘Bernina Railway’. The Bernina Railway is the (originally independent) railway line from St Moritz to Tirano – it became part of the RhB in 1943. It has regular ‘normal’ train services, here is the PDF timetable :
