This journey promises stunning views and comfortable travel.

Key takeaways:
  • All train carriages on the Bernina Express with seat reservations have panoramic windows, while some carriages have smaller windows.
  • Yes, there are toilets available on the Bernina Express.

    Hi,

We have some questions about the Bernina Express. We will be using our Swiss Travel Pass.

    • First, do the carriages of the whole train have panoramic windows that stretch up to the ceiling?
    • Are there toilets on the train?
    • If none, can we get on and off Bernina Express without losing our seats and paying for another reservation fee?

Thanks in advance for all your input.

    Best,

    Maria Bonifacio

    Hi Maria .

Usually there are two types of carriages on the Bex

The ones you need a seat reservation to board ( which all have panoramic windows etc).

Thete are also two or three Allegra units ( other type of carriage)for those with no seat reservation (smaller windows).

And yes ,there are toilets on the BEX .

The simple way to a perfect Swiss trip

The Bernina Express operates in two ways. There are two direct trains per day May – October (one runs all year) which run Chur – Albula railway – Samedan – Pontresina – Bernina Railway – Tirano.

Other services designated as ‘Bernina Express’ also run on the pure Bernina Railway route St Moritz – Pontresina – Tirano

The direct through train from Chur is always made up with either 5 or 6 ‘Bernina’ Panorama coaches (which are specific to the Bernina express designed to cope with tight curves and steep gradients on the real Bernina Railway Pontresina – Tirano). The coaches are pulled by an Allegra power unit (which are universal traction units used all over the RhB railway Network. The do not have the ‘up to the ceiling’ windows, and they are not the vehicles in which tourists reserve seats for the full distance Bernina journey.

Attached are two pictures I took in June 2022 showing the afternoon Bernina Express crossing the river Rhine at Reichenau Tamins on its way south from Chur. The first picture shows the front – ie Allegra unit pulling the train through the station. The second picture shows the Panorama carriages from the rear as the train goes away across the river.

    Hi,

Thank you for answering my questions so quickly. You even provided a picture of the toilet which is very helpful.
