A traveler is planning a two-week honeymoon in Switzerland and Italy, specifically from December to January. They want advice on the fastest route to Milan after taking the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz and whether they should stop in Chur or continue directly to Milan. They're also looking for details on train connections and pass options.
Key takeaways:
You can change trains in Chur to take the Bernina Express towards Lugano, which leads to Milan later.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers most travel in Switzerland but does not include seat reservations, which are necessary for the Glacier Express and Bernina Express.
Consider staying overnight in St. Moritz after your Glacier Express journey before heading to Milan for a more comfortable trip.
Always check the SBB timetable for the latest travel options and times to plan your journey effectively.

I will be travelling to Switzerland and Italy(Milan) for my honeymoon in Dec – Jan for 2 weeks.
I will be taking the Glacier Express as my last activity in Switzerland and plan to head to Italy (Milan) to continue our trip.
I see that the Bernina Express travels to Italy but im confused with the routes.
Which is the best and fastest route to get to Milan? Do I stop somewhere in the middle of my Glacier Express trip (Chur??) and hop on to another train to Milan?
Congratulations and how nice to be honeymooning in Switzerland and Italy.
Traveling from Zermatt to Milan is actually fairly straightforward. With just one change in Brig, you can be in Milan in 3 and a half hours. You can research your journey using the SBB timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable
I am unsure how long you will be in Switzerland but it maybe worth considering a rail pass. Here’s the link for an overview of available rail passes in Switzerland:
However Im will be taking the Glacier Express full journey Zermatt to St. Moritz. Do i return back to Zermatt (another 8hours) to head to Milan? Or should I stop somewhere in the middle of my journey?
And does it make sense for me to travel straight to Milan on the same day?
You can also travel to Milan from St. Moritz. The quickest route with a few changes will take around 5 hours 15 minutes but completely doable (research the timings via the timetable link I provided earlier).
The Glacier Express is a beautiful, long train journey (https://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress) and would encompass a full day’s traveling. I don’t think you’d be able to take a train after arriving in St.Moritz. Moreover, even if you could, after 8 hours on the Glacier Express, I’d think you’d probably not want to sit on another train for a further 5 hours or so. I’d stay overnight in St.Moritz before starting my trip to Milan.
Just a reminder, if you are traveling on the Glacier Express, there are compulsory seat reservations that you will need to purchase. Details can be found in the “tickets’ tab in the above link.
Another option, is to leave the Glacier Express in Chur and take the Bernina Express to Lugano. From Lugano, you can take a train to Milan. More information on the Bernina Express below (reservations are also mandatory for the Bernina Express).
As long as you have the necessary seat reservations, you can alight at Chur and board the Bernina Express. If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, this would cover your travel but not the seat reservations – these need to be booked and paid for. Please take at look at the respective links I have provided earlier so you can familiarise yourself with what needs to be done to secure the reservations if you opt with either/or.
So, to confirm the Swiss Travel Pass will cover the majority of your travel in Switzerland only. No need for ticket purchases. Here’s the coverage map for the Swiss Travel Pass. You will only need to buy a ticket on the routes that are broken/dotted. These are typically mountain transportation.
For ease, perhaps as you are planning on taking the Glacier Express anyways, run with taking the train from St.Moritz to Lugano and omitting the Bernina Express.
I’ve checked in the SBB app for the journey from Zermatt to Milan. However it says 5 to 6 hrs of journey time. May I know what is the right selection to get the 3.5hrs that you’ve mentioned?
Please see attached PDF, option 3 or 5 would be the 3 and half hour journey based on a search for today. You just need to key your date of travel and your options will be displayed.
