Best tickets for train round trip Zurich-Zermatt

Short summary – read this first

Meredith is planning a trip to Switzerland with her husband and 7-year-old daughter, seeking advice on the best train tickets for a round trip from Zurich to Zermatt. She is confused about ticket prices and options, particularly regarding Super Saver tickets and the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider purchasing Super Saver tickets for lower prices, but be aware they are non-refundable and fixed.
  • If you plan to travel frequently within Switzerland, the Swiss Half Fare Card could be a good option, allowing point-to-point ticket purchases.
  • Your daughter can travel free with you on the train; just make sure to get the Swiss Family Card if you choose a rail pass.

My husband, 7 year old daughter and myself will be traveling in Switzerland. We are struggling to figure out the right passes to purchase. We need round trip tickets from Zurich to Zermatt. I saw we can purchase Super Saver tickets which decrease the cost, but it automatically assumed we had 1/2 price saver tickets. If I look online, the price I am seeing is CHF185 but other places say it should be CHF134 for us but I cannot find that on the SBB website anywhere. Are we able to purchase it for CHF134? Also as non-Swiss citizens, we can purchase this type of ticket correct?

If we do not but the 1/2 price fare, does my daughter need a regular ticket or is she free?

What is our best option to try and save money for getting these tickets ? Do we want to buy in advance super saver with 1/2 fare? Do we buy swiss flexible travel passes in stead? Help Please 🙂

“We need round trip tickets from Zurich to Zermatt”

Is that the only travel you plan to do? What will you do in Zermatt? View the mountains, or do you plan to take transportation to one or more locations outside Zermatt? How much additional travel will you do, and where? All this impacts your choice in the best passes. Also, how long will you be staying in Switzerland? That might impact how much additional traveling you’ll do.

As Pvonk says, we need to know much more about your overall trip, but a few general points:

    1) SuperSaver tickets are like advanced air fares and hotel bookings – non refundable and fixed, this makes them a risky purchase, especially if you plan to use them immediately upon arrival at an airport in Switzerland.

    2) The best ‘one day’ ticket (especially over longer distance and if you do a side trip within the day) is the Saver Day Pass which is available to all. The prices are set by algorithm so go up and down in price, but if you book a SDP as soon as you know your travel date it is likely to cost between CHF 52 and CHF 70 per person. Details here:

    Hello Meredith,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, it can be overwhelming with all the different ticket options and rail passes available here. Per pvonk, (thank you pvonk) the most sensible, economical tickets or passes to purchase will depend on your itinerary in Switzerland.

Many members find it helpful to read this link, it helps them choose which pass or type of ticket to buy.

If you are not planning to travel too much, you may find the sensible choice is to opt with the Swiss Half Fare Card, and purchase the point to point tickets as and when. Alternatively, if your intention is to travel frequently and further afar, perhaps a pass would be better. Have a look at the links, these should help 🙂

For your 7-year old daughter, should you proceed with either of the Swiss Travel System rail passes, she would be entitled to travel free whilst with you or your husband. Be sure to order the Swiss Family Card, if you decide on either of the rail passes.

I hope this helps, feel free to reach out with any further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
