July trip: Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France – best rail pass?

Short summary – read this first

Rick Lane is planning a summer trip that includes Northern Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and the French Alps, focusing on using mountain cable cars and gondola lifts. He wants advice on the best travel passes for all four countries, particularly since he knows the Swiss Travel Pass is good for Switzerland. This trip sounds exciting, and there are several options to consider.

Key takeaways:
  • Research local transport options in each destination, as there may be regional passes available.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is excellent for mountain travel within Switzerland but consider the Swiss Half Fare Card for specific journeys.
  • For wider European travel, examine the Eurail Pass options and their benefits in neighboring countries.

We are planning a trip for this summer that will include Northern Italy, Austria, Switzerland and the France Alps.  We are planning to use a lot of mountain top cable cars and gondola lifts.  I know the Swiss Travel Pass is great for Switzerland but what pass(es) should I look at for all four countries?

    Thanks,

    Rick Lane

    Hi Rick,

This forum is focused on Switzerland. While we can help people with questions about neighbouring countries in relation to arriving in and departing from Switzerland, such detail as you are asking for in relation to Italy, Austria and France is really outside the scope and expertise of this forum.

If I were you, I would do three things:

    1. Google the localities where you are intending to use mountain transport – both the local town and the individual cable car companies etc and see what is on offer. There might be local passes available if you are staying in the one place for a period of time.

    2. Use the appropriate forums on Trip Advisor.

    3. Check the Eurail site for information to help you decide whether a Eurail Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/eurail-global-pass/) will be useful for train travel, and what additional benefits (if any) apply to any of the countries in which you will travel.

    Happy planning!

    Hi Rick,

Here’s our guide to the Eurail Global Pass, that Alpenrose mentions:

Within, we’ve summarised mainly the Swiss side of things that are included, and what discounts are offered – Swiss mountain trips, scenic train trips.

That said, in the downloadable coverage map, you will also be able to view the routes that the Eurail Global Pass includes for the rest of Europe.

Otherwise, if you need additional specifics for the other countries you are visiting, best you research other similar forums as Alpenrose has suggested.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Rick

My wife and I will be using Zürich as a base in July and travelling both within and outside of Switzerland. We have the Swiss Half Fare Card. It halves the price of rail travel within the Swiss borders (but full price from that point to your destination). We’ll be going to Innsbruck and Lake Como. The best type of pass for your trip depends on the nature of your travel: many short flexible trips vs a smaller number of longer trips, for example.

We chose the half fare card (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/) because we have just a few specific journeys but also because it applies to many of our planned activities in the area around Grindelwald, where we’ll also be staying.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
