Where to see the Valais Blacknose sheep in October?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Charbear is visiting Switzerland from October 9 to October 23 and is looking to interact with Blacknose sheep in areas like Zermatt and other locations. Unfortunately, they’ve found out that the sheep will not be available for interaction during their trip as they are typically in barns by late October. Charbear is seeking help to find alternative opportunities to see the sheep.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider visiting Belalp near Brig where Blacknose sheep usually roam free in the summer months until October.
  • If interacting with the sheep is important, plan your next trip for July or August when they are more accessible.
  • Contact local tourism offices for the most up-to-date information on sheep interactions.

We will be in Switzerland from 9 Oct – 23 Oct. We will be in the areas of Zermatt, Locarno, St. Moritz, Bad Ragaz, Lauterbrunen, Grindelwald, etc. We would love to see and interact with these beautiful creatures but have been successful in identifying where this is possible. Family Julen in Zermatt said their sheep will back in the stables and will be unavailable to the public. I reached out to the Black Nose Sheep Society of Valais but they did not respond. I hoped with your knowledge and contacts you or one of your members might be able to assist. My wife has her heart set on this. Hope you can assist. Thanks!

Hello Charbear–your question got me curious about the Valais Blacknose sheep herds in the Gornergrat/Zermatt. It sounds like the sheep are “on holiday” in the mountains in September, October, May and June, meaning that they are not fitted with GPS collars during those time, so tracking them is not possible. This likely is due to the animals needing intervals of time where they have minimal interaction with humans. In late October they are herded down from the mountains into their barns and sheared (and sheared again in February). The Julen Family offers scheduled interactions with the sheep in the barns from December to April on their website. I understand it may be disappointing to your wife, but it may not be possible to interact with the sheep in October as it may not be in the sheep’s best interests to do so. It may be too late for this trip, but if seeing the sheep is a must-do activity for your wife, make it a priority for your next trip during the months of July and August?

Hopefully some of the experts here on the forums will have more information.

    Hi Charbear,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

You can see Blacknosed sheep in Belalp near Brig (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/brig/). There are usually free to roam the pastures in the summer between May to October. But end of October might be a bit too late. But you can contact the Belalp Tourism directly and make a request.

    Regards,

    Anna
