GoldenPass Prestige Class with 2nd class Berner Oberland Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Montreux to Murren on May 22nd using second class Berner Oberland passes. They are unsure if they need to buy an additional upgrade to first class for their Prestige Class ticket on the Golden Pass. Seeking clarity, they ask for advice from fellow forum members about any necessary upgrades.

Key takeaways:
  • You need to purchase an additional upgrade ticket to first class since your Berner Oberland Pass is only for second class.
  • The upgrade can be bought on the SBB Mobile App or at any train station, even onboard the train if needed.
  • Make sure to secure your upgrade prior to your trip to avoid any last-minute issues.

I purchased second class BO passes and plan on using them on May 22nd on my trip from Montreux to Murren.  I understand you need to make seat reservations on the Golden Pass so I bought a Prestige Class ticket.  I assumed that is all I needed to do but I read elsewhere that I may need to also buy an upgrade ticket to first class since the BO pass is only second class.  Can someone please let me know if I need to buy an additional upgrade?  Many thanks!

    Hi bespo77,

Traveling in the GoldenPass (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/) Prestige class requires a 1st class ticket or pass, plus an additional reservation supplement of CHF 49 per person. As you have already purchased your seat reservation, and also have a 2nd class Berner Oberland Pass, all you need to is purchase a class upgrade. You can buy the upgrade on the SBB Mobile App or directly from any train station. Please find further details here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/train/classes/

    Regards,

Thanks Anna.  Can I upgrade my Berner Oberland Pass to first class or is it too late?

    Hi bespo77,

No, it’s not too late to purchase your upgrade.  You can even purchase the upgrade when you are onboard the train.  Personally I would do it prior, just so you have everything in hand.

    Enjoy Prestige Class.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Hi bespo77,

In most cases, it’s not possible to upgrade your pass once you’ve bought it, or to cancel it for free and buy another 1st class pass. You can best contact the webshop you ordered your Berner Oberland Pass from to make sure.

    https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/berner-oberland-pass/#tickets

No worries though: you can get a class upgrade for any train or boat route on which 1st class is available :-)!
