Boat cruises on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun with Berner Oberland Pass

Short summary – read this first

Nick is planning his first trip to Switzerland from late August to mid-September and has questions about boat cruises on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. He plans to buy the Berner Oberland Pass, which offers free cruises, and seeks clarity on scheduled stops, breakfast options on a specific cruise, and the possibility of hopping between different boats.

Key takeaways:
  • The boat will only stop at certain docks if they are included in the scheduled timetable.
  • You can skip the breakfast on the breakfast cruise if you prefer.
  • You are allowed to hop on and off different boats as long as the timing works for you.
  • Consider traveling on historic paddle steamers for a scenic experience.
  • The Berner Oberland Pass can be conveniently purchased online and emailed to you.

    Hello,

This is my first post. Your website is really great and contains full of good information that helps me to plan for my upcoming trip in late Aug to mid Sep so thank you so much for all the work you have done!

I have some questions related to the boat cruise on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. I was able to download the boat route and the time table from the Berner Oberland pass website (file attached) but still have some questions using Lake Brienz route. I’m planning to purchase the Berner Oberland Pass so these cruises will be free.

    1. Same places are marked as occasional (eg from Bonigen to Ringgenberg) and marked with dotted line but no info on what conditions they will make a stop there. Is this based on request?
    2. Cruise 59 is a breakfast cruise. For this cruise do you need to take the breakfast or can you skip the breakfast part?
    3. Can you hop on and off using different boats? Example take cruise 63 and continue with cruise 65 or 69.

Thanks in advance for your help in answering my questions.

    Nick

Hi Nikolaus, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

    >>> Same places are marked as occasional (eg from Bonigen to Ringgenberg) and marked with dotted line but no info on what conditions they will make a stop there. Is this based on request?

Whether the boat will stop at a particular dock is based on scheduled stops in the timetable. So if you wanted to get the boat from Bönigen to Ringgenberg, you would need to select a boat that was scheduled to stop at both docks.

    >>> Cruise 59 is a breakfast cruise. For this cruise do you need to take the breakfast or can you skip the breakfast part?

You can take the cruise without also having the breakfast.

    >>> Can you hop on and off using different boats? Example take cruise 63 and continue with cruise 65 or 69

    Yes, you can.

If the timing works for you, I would recommend you travel at least part of one of the lakes on one of the historic paddle steamers.

Depending on how you are arriving in the Jungfrau Region (https://www.myswissalps.com/region/jungfrau-region/) you can incorporate a cruise on your arrival day, e.g. if you are travelling from Luzern to Interlaken Ost, you can get off at Brienz and get a boat to Interlaken Ost before continuing to your destination by train. Luggage is no problem on the boat, and transfers between station and boat at both Brienz and Interlaken Ost are step-free. Both stations are adjacent to the boat docks.

    Enjoy your boat rides!
