Boat ride, Montreux and Chillon Castle in 1 day

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a day trip from Sion, aiming to explore Lake Geneva, visit Montreux, Château Chillon, and walk through Lavaux vineyards. They seek advice on the best route, transportation options, and whether their itinerary is manageable within one day, especially considering their age and walking capability.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient travel between Sion and various destinations
  • Consider starting your trip by taking a train to Villeneuve, then walking to Château Chillon for a scenic route
  • To maximize your day, use the boat from Château Chillon to Vevey and explore the lakefront on foot
  • Plan shorter visits at each stop to manage your time effectively, especially given your walking distance preference.

We will be starting our day trip from Sion. We will have a Swiss Travel Pass. Looking for suggestions to experience the following in one day: [1] Lake Geneva boat ride, [2] Visit Vivey, Montreaux, Chateau Chillon; [3] walk through Lavaux vineyards, and any suggestions unless to much already for one day….

What I am eager to hear is the order and way to accomplish this-logistically

Example: take train from Sion to Lausanne, or not…Take boat (which one? and from where to where )

We would love to walk part of this, lakefront? vineyards? from castle ? We are good for easy/moderate walks and for up to 2-3 miles each, from start to finish.

Is this too much for one day, especially since we are so far away to start our day?

I am so impressed by all the wonderful advice you offer to people like me-thank you.

We are 3 persons in out 70’s, we want to be on the water, but dont need a big cruise per se, just to be on the water is good, so if ferry is the answer-that’s OK.

Again, thank you so much. Appreciate it!

    Hi Anitadevans, welcome to MySwissAlps!

That’s quite a lot for 1 day, but it can be done if you plan carefully and pay short visits to each destination. There are many options to schedule these activities. Here’s an example:

An alternative is to start at the Chillon Castle, then make a longer boat trip to a lakeside town in the Lavaux area, and work your way back via Vevey and Montreux.

One more option is to skip a walk in the Lavaux area. That will give you more time to explore the other destinations at ease. For example: travel by boat from Villeneuve to Vevey. After that, visit Montreux. Then make an easy lakeside walk to the Chillon Castle, and/or walk from the castle to Villeneuve.

The timetable helps you to plan each segment of your day trip carefully: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

I hope this provides you with a few ideas!

    Annika,

    thank you so much!

I have spent pretty much the whole afternoon just playing with this one day!!

What do you think of this–Train Sion to Villeneuve, walk to Chateau Chillon, then get to Vevey (?? boat, train or bus??) Look around there , maybe even take the funicular to Mont Pelerin?, after time in Vevey, train to Chebres and walk down to Saint Saphorin , from there take boat to Villeneuve and then train back to Sion.

After reading your comments, I decided that since we will be back 3 days later to take the Golden Pass train out of Montreux , we could store bags and spend an hour or 2 in Montreux then.

Am I thinking straight, or totally ..not? thank you so much!

That sounds good to me. Lake Geneva has been my ‘local’ area for 60 years so any other questions just ask.

The advantage of the lake shore between Villeneuve and Vevey is that it is covered by three transport options, the ‘VMCV’ trolleybus (a tramway until conversion in 1957 – my late father took photos of the trams in the 1950s), the main line railway and the lake boat.
