Boat trips on Lake Thun, Lake Brienz or both?

Short summary – read this first

A couple, FrankandCara, will be in the Bernese Oberland for a week in June and want to take boat cruises on Lakes Brienz and Thun. They're considering taking the train to one lake and returning by boat, and they're unsure if they should do one or both cruises. It sounds like a fun plan!

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train to either Brienz or Thun and return by boat for a scenic experience.
  • Both cruises are worth it, but if pressed for time, choose one based on your interests.
  • The boat services are part of Switzerland's integrated travel system, so you can combine them with trains and buses easily.

We will be in the Bernese Oberland for a week in June and would like to do either one or both of the boat cruises on Lakes Brienz and Thun. Rather than doing a roundtrip cruise from Interlaken I was thinking of taking a train directly to either Brienz or Thun and then riding the boat back to Interlaken. Does this seem practical? Is it worth taking both cruises or should we select one?

Hi FrankandCara and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

I would do just one boat trip either on Lake Thun or on Lake Brienz. Thun is a nice town so yes, I would definitely recommend doing as you described – take the train and come back by boat (or vice versa).

If you go to Brienz, you can also try the steam train to the Brienzer Rothorn. (The train from Brienz and the cable car from Sörenberg operate from 4 June to 23 October 2022. From 7 May to 3 June 2022 there are train rides from Brienz to the mid-station Planalp.)

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko

    Yes, completely practical.

Don’t forget that on the large Swiss lakes, the boat services are part of the integrated national travel system, so you can use them as part of a trip involving buses and trains. Interlaken – Spiez – Thun takes a very short time really and you can see some of the historic town before coming back on the boat. On the Brienzersee, the boat journey is comparitively short and you see most of the same views from the Interlaken – Meiringen train.

I would do both as I love being on Swiss lake steamers
