Brienzer Rothorn+Gelmerbahn: Berner Oberland Pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Hamal Hero is planning a trip that involves the Gelmerbahn Rollercoaster and Brienz Rothorn Bahn using the Berner Oberland Pass. They're puzzled about how to book the Gelmerbahn ride for free and whether it's possible to take a one-way journey to various destinations or if a return trip is mandatory.

Key takeaways:
  • You need to pay to reserve a spot for the Gelmerbahn ride, even though the trip to the station is covered by the Berner Oberland Pass.
  • For the Brienz Rothorn Bahn, booking a guaranteed seat in advance is also required; the journey itself is included in the BO Pass.
  • Check the SBB timetable to plan your connections efficiently, especially if you want to do other activities after the Gelmerbahn ride.
  • Consider visiting Aare Gorge or Reichenbach Falls as options after the Gelmerbahn, as they are nearby and accessible.

With Berner Oberland Pass, Grimselwelt = Gelmerbahn Rollercoaster is free but the Gelmberbahn official site says it needs to be booked as it’s quite difficult to get the ride.

If I make plan for next day and go straight to the location and show BO Pass, I might not get into it because it will be fully booked. So to book in advance, I have to book on official site and to do that, I have to pay because there is no option of showing BO Pass.

    1. How do I get it booked for free for next day or future days through official Gelmberbahn site?

Also, Brienz Rothorn Bahn is also free on BO Pass, same thing could be happened as it is very popular ride. Btw, Instead of taking return journey, Is it possible to do this route, Brienz > Brienz Rothorn Bahn Ride One Way > Rothorn, then from there, either train or boat to do cruise tour to Lake Brienz around or to Harder Kulm Cable Car Station or to Meiringin train station? OR Return journey is compulsory?

    Hello Hamal Hero,

A ride on the Gelmerbahn is not included with the Berner Oberland Pass.

Travel to where the Gelmerbahn location is, is included with your Berner Oberland Pass. Please see the validity map here:

You can book your Gelmerbahn tickets here: https://www.grimselwelt.ch/en/railways/gelmerbahn/ (Note, rail passes do not offer discounts either)

All about visiting and enjoying the Brienzer Rothorn here:

Scroll to “More information”, here you can organise a guaranteed seat on the desired departure time. The journey itself is covered by your Berner Oberland Pass but the ‘reservation’ cost for the guaranteed seat, is not covered.

Once at the top, correct, you would need to make your way down to Brienz, if you wanted to take a boat trip on Lake Brienz.

To visit Harder Kulm, you would need to head back to Interlaken. All information below:

Similarly you can travel to Meringen too. All covered by your Berner Oberland Pass.

Just plan your trip using the SBB timetable.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Hamal,

We did the Gelmerbahn ride in June and there are some tips I gave in my trip report. You can find it in this link, just scroll down till you see the post on Gelmerbahn. The BO Pass only covers the journey to the Gelmerbahn station but not the ride itself. Actually June when we went is considered non peak as the rides had just opened up. Even then, we saw that seats were easily taken up on certain days.

You can always check how many seats are available before actually confirming your booking. You have to pay once you book the tickets.

The weather app should give you a good gauge 3 days ahead of time.

Hope my trip report helps you in your planning:

Thank you both of you, I will check out those links.

Btw, if Gelmberbahn ride can be done before 14:00 ,which one of these is closest to do? (All seems equal but return back to Interlaken/Meiringin, which one is considerable?)

    – Brienz Rothorn Bahn

    – Cruise on Both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz

    – Kandersteg Town and cable car to Oeschinensee and Lake around

    – Is Hasilberg worth going?

All are covered with BO Pass.

    HI Hamal,

Again this is just my personal preference which I am sharing – if you are taking enough mt rides, then do something different. Since you will be at Meiringen, perhaps you may wish to consider doing the AARE GORGE which has a pleasant boardwalk (it’s in my trip report). You are already in that area of Meiringen so that may save you some time. You will need to check the sbb timetable to see whether it is more feasible to do Aare Gorge before Gelmerbahn. The transport schedule is a little tricky.

For cruises, I feel there is no need to do two lake cruises as it can be a little monotonous. Perhaps a suggestion for the cruise on Lake Brienz and to Giessbach if you wish (in my trip report). But if you are seeing other waterfalls, then you can skip Giessbach.

Hasliberg has nice views but I think you will have already had quite a lot of such views during your mt trips. I can’t comment on Kandersteg or Oeshinensee as we did not make a trip there due to lack of time.

    Hi Hamal Hero,

I agree with traveljet – visiting the Aare Gorge after Gelmerbahn might be viable. From Handegg, Gelmerbahn you can reach Aareschlucht West entrance in 40 minutes. Visiting the Reichenbach Falls could also be an option. With the Berner Oberland Pass, you can purchase a return ticket to the Reichenbach Falls at a reduced price (CHF8 return).

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

That seems like a very good option. Thank you Anna.
