Hello! We are planning a day trip to Chamonix using our Swiss Travel Pass. We are 4 adults ( full STP ) and  14 y/o with a free Family card. We learned fr this wonderful site that STP covers all the way to Vallorcine and we can purchase tickets at Martigny. I am enclosing our tentative travel time. Will we have enough time at Martigny to purchase tickets? Can we purchase the return ticket fr Vallorcine to Chamonix in Vevey before we board the train or it has to be Martigny? Is our 14 y/o free or with a discount fr Vallorcine to Chamonix? Also MBX means Mont Blanc Express right? There is no platform number at Vallorcine and it indicated that we will ride a TER there. What is TER 😅 so we know what we are looking for? Do we have to go somewhere when we arrive in Vallorcine to ride the TER or is it in the same platform? Thank you so much!

    Hi Samlam,

The Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/) and Swiss Family Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/discount/) will cover you as far as Le Châtelard-Frontière (the last station before the border), but you don’t change trains until Vallorcine (the following station, which is the first station within France).

You can buy your return tickets for the sector Le Châtelard-Frontière to Chamonix at Vevey. Just show them your Swiss Travel Passes and Swiss Family Card and they will know what tickets you need. You will need to pay for your child between Le Châtelard-Frontière and Chamonix. I don’t know what the maximum age is for a child discount to apply though.

Yes, MBX stands for Mont-Blanc Express. TER is an abbreviation for Transport Express Régional, which just means a regional train in France.

Vallorcine is a very small station (pictures attached), and there is a screen showing details of departures. If you need to cross the tracks, there is a walkway to use.

At Martigny, Platform 40 for the Mont-Blanc Express is on the other side of Platform 1.

You can see a platform plan of Martigny station here:

    https://www.sbb.ch/en/travel-information/stations/find-station/station.1500.martigny.html

The best views between Martigny and Vallorcine are on the left in the direction of travel.

    I hope this clarifies things!
