Buying tickets not covered by Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Rachbryn8 is planning a trip to Switzerland and wants to know about using the Swiss Travel Pass, especially regarding cable cars and other transport for hiking. They seek advice on how to find out if they need to buy separate tickets for specific journeys, like in Grindelwald.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers public transport like trains and buses, but you need separate tickets for cable cars and mountain railways.
  • You can buy discounted tickets for cable cars at their counters when you present your Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Plan your hikes in advance and check the routes using relevant apps or websites to know which transport options are included.

    Hi!

I am planning on getting the Swiss pass for my upcoming trip but I read that sometimes not every transport is covered (some cable cars and things). When I am using the app the find my route to different hikes, how do I know when I need to buy a separate ticket for something? Also, how do I go about doing that? For example if I’m going somewhere in grindelwald for hiking how do I know if one of the cable cars or something requires me to buy a separate ticket even if I have Swiss pass

    Hi Rachbryn8,

I know it gets a bit overwhelming reading about the various railpasses available for your Swiss trip. With the Swiss Travel Pass, the most important thing to remember is that you don’t need tickets for trips on public transport such as trains, buses and trams. However you do need tickets to ride cable cars and mountain railways. You can get discounted tickets at the counter when you present your Swiss Travel Pass. Please refer to these links for more information: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity and http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/howtouse

For example, if you’re planning a mountain hike to Bachalpsee in Grindelwald from another base such as Interlaken or Bern, your train journey from Interlaken or Bern to Grindelwald is covered by the STP. To get to the Bachalpsee trail, you need to ride the cable car up to Grindelwald First and this is where you will need to get a separate ticket. You can do so at the cable car ticket machine or counter. Just present the STP to get a discounted ticket. You should plan your hikes in advance. You can find plenty of hike suggestions here: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking If you click on the ‘Route’ tab, you’ll find information about how to reach the trails by public transport, cable cars or mountain railways.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna
