Hike Mürren-Gimmelwald, then take cable car Gimmelwald-Stechelberg?
Allan is heading to Switzerland from Munich and has questions about the cable car routing for a birthday trip to Schilthorn, starting from Stechelberg. He wants to confirm if they can take a cable car from Gimmelwald back down to Stechelberg after hiking from Murren, as he is worried about the route changes and potential ticket issues.
- The cable car route from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald is still operational, so you can plan for that trip.
- Use the Swiss timetable to verify travel routes and schedules before your trip for peace of mind.
- Be prepared for the steep cable car ride from Stechelberg to Murren, it offers stunning views!

Hello all!
We’re on our way to the airport as I type this. We’re starting in Munich and will be in Switzerland in a few days.
I have a question about the cable car routing for the Schilthorn trip, starting from Stechelberg.
We will have a rental car and plan to park at Stechelberg to take the trip up (on May 31st, my son’s birthday).
We plan to ride the cable car(s) all the way to the top, with a stop at Birg for the Thrill Walk, then ride back down as far as Murren.
Here’s where I get confused – the hike from Murren down to Gimmelwald is highly recommended and we want to do it, but can we then continue on the cable car from Gimmelwald down to Stechelberg?
My understanding is that the routing used to go Stechelberg – Gimmelwald – Murren – Birg – Schilthorn, but has Gimmelwald been excluded? It looks to me like it now goes from Stechelberg directly to Murren.
I don’t want to be stuck in Gimmelwald without the time to hike the last leg, and we don’t want to have to purchase another cable car ticket to finish the trip!
Sorry for the rambling – hope this makes sense!
Allan
