Can you bring food and drinks into Switzerland?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Galvatron is planning to bring packed biscuits and fruit juice into Switzerland and wants to know the rules about importing food. They are particularly curious about whether the laws are similar to Australia, where all food must be declared. Ildiko and another user provide information about the restrictions on food imports and offer some reassurance regarding biscuits.

Key takeaways:
  • You cannot bring food of animal origin or live plants from non-EU/non-EFTA countries into Switzerland.
  • Packed biscuits should be fine to bring, but it’s safer to consume any fruit juice before landing.
  • If unsure about bringing fruit juice sachets, it might be best to leave them behind and buy local after arrival.

    Hi everyone,

Are you allowed to bring food (eg biscuits) and drinks (packed fruit juice) into Switzerland?

Is it like Australia where you have to declare all the food and drinks you bring into Switzerland?

I plan to bring some biscuits and packed fruit juice/coffee sachet for own consumption into Switzerland

    Hi Galvatron,

You are not permitted to import any foodstuffs of animal origin (meat, dairy products, etc.) from non-EU and non-EFTA countries or live plants and parts of plants (incl. fruit/vegetables) from non-EU and non-EFTA countries and the Canary Islands (import is prohibited or subject to restrictions).

With some packed biscuits and coffee sachet, you shouldn’t have any problem.

To be honest, I am not quite sure. I think it is better if you drink it on the plane and take only water with you after you landed.

We also have some kind of fruit juice sachets here too. Sure, they are not the same but you can buy some other brands later in the shops.
