Seat reservation for Chiasso-Lugano?

Short summary – read this first

Luissa is planning a trip from Florence to Lugano, using her Swiss Travel Pass for the leg from Chiasso to Lugano. She's asking if she needs to reserve seats for this short journey. The community reassures her that seat reservations aren't necessary for this route, as there are frequent trains and her pass is sufficient.

Key takeaways:
  • You don’t need a seat reservation for the Chiasso to Lugano trip; just hop on any train.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers your journey, and you can travel without additional seat reservations unless on special panoramic trains or longer international routes.

    Hi!

We are traveling from Florence to Lugano and throughout Switzerland. We have already a SwissPass (8D Flex Pass). We booked a one way trip from Florence to Chiasso with Trainline. We are planning to use the SwissPass from Chiasso to Lugano. Question: Do we need seats for that leg of the trip (and if yes do we buy them when we get in the train) or the SwissPass will suffice without the need to buy seats? Thank you.

you don’t need seat reservations Chiasso – Lugano, there are many trains. In any case, coming from Florence you will come via Milan and will possibly already be on a through train to Lugano.

The vast majority of main line Swiss trains are ‘just walk on and sit down’ – especially if you already have a valid normal ticket or Swiss Pass

Hi IGG13! That’s correct, your Swiss Travel Pass Flex (not SwissPass, that’s a product for Swiss residents only) will cover the journey: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpassflex/vali dity. Seat reservations are only required for special panoramic trains and some longer international routes: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/reservations.

Sure, it is possible to have a SwissPass for people who visit Switzerland frequently, e.g. to store their one year Half Fare-travelcard on. It’s not something that most tourists need to look into though.
