Children travel free with Swiss Family Card?

Short summary – read this first

Chadbangerte is planning a trip and wants to confirm if children under 16 can travel free on the Swiss Family Card when accompanied by an adult. They found unclear information on a purchase site about whether children need tickets for discounted trains like those to Jungfraujoch.

Key takeaways:
  • Children aged 6-15 travel for free with the Swiss Family Card when accompanied by an adult.
  • You can obtain the Swiss Family Card for free at any staffed ticket station in Switzerland when you purchase a Swiss Travel Pass.
  • When booking online, be cautious of additional fees; purchasing the Swiss Family Card at the station avoids this.

I am looking for confirmation that children under age 16 travel free on the Swiss Family Pass if accompained by any adult with the Swiss Pass on discounted trains such as the Jungfraujoch. I thought I had read that they do travel free however, when I went to one of the purchase links on your website, it only provided the discounted rate for the children, not free. Is that something I need to be concerned about?

    Thank you.

    Hi Chadbangerte,

That’s right. With the Swiss Family Card, children 6-15 years old travel along for free on public transport as well as mountain transportation. There is no need to purchase any tickets for accompanying children if you have this pass.

For example, for the trip to Jungfraujoch, you just need discounted tickets for the adults in the group.

You can find information on how to use the Swiss Family Card here: https://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard/howtouse

I believe with the Swiss Family Card it is free travel if accompanied by at least one paying parent. You can get a Children’s Co-travelcard at any staffed ticket office for 30CHF if there is a need for a child to travel with another adult.

    Hello,

Please, I would like to know if I can buy a Swiss Travel Pass promo (4 days + 1 free) for 2 adults and travel with my 2 children 10 and 13 years old, for free. If it is possible, how can I get the Swiss Family Card for them? Is it necessary 1 family card for each one?

    Thank you,

    Rodrigo

    Hello Rodrigo,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

When purchasing your Swiss Travel Pass, the Swiss Family Card is complimentary (free), you simply request one: see links below. Should you forget to do so, you can also go to any staffed rail station in Switzerland when you arrive and show you have the Swiss Travel Pass and a Swiss Family Card will be processed for you. You will probably get two, one for each parent.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hello Yolanda,

Thank you for your help. I am currently on the GetYourGuide website to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass and was surprised to see that there is a fee for the Swiss Family Card. As you mentioned, I have learned that it is possible to obtain the Swiss Family Card at the train station for free, so I will plan to do that instead.

Thank you again for your assistance.

    Best regards,

    Rodrigo

    Hi Rodrigo,

Thank you for sharing this information. We shall look into this, maybe it’s an administration fee.

Indeed the Swiss Family Card is free of charge.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
