Chillon Castle, Gruyeres and Cailler chocolate!

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a two-day trip to Geneva on July 19 and 20. They want to explore all of Geneva one day and visit Chillon Castle, Gruyeres, and the Cailler Chocolate Factory on the second day. They need tips on traveling to these places using public transport, since they won't have a car.

Key takeaways:
  • You can use public transport to visit Chillon Castle, Gruyeres, and the Cailler Chocolate Factory in one long day, but expect around 13 hours of travel time.
  • For a good lunch in Gruyeres, try the restaurant at the Cheese Factory, which is also part of your tour.
  • The Giger Museum in Gruyeres is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, so it's worth a visit.

We have two full days in Geneva (July 19 & 20) and wanted to see all of Geneva one day and then try to tour Chillon Castle, go to Gruyeres and tour Cailler Chocolate Factory the second day.

1- Is this possible in one day to see all 3 places? We can make it a really long day 🙂

2- How would we travel to all 3 places with public transportation? We will not have a car.

Thank you so much for any advice

Hi Cindy and welcome to MySwissAlps!

That should be possible to do by public transport. To check what travel and starting times you would be happy with, you can use the timetable tool to work it all out http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

I also include a couple of links to help you:

    Wishing you a wonderful time!

Another alternative (which would probably rule out Chillon on same day) is http://www.goldenpass.ch/asse ts/media/offer/Offre_T rain_du_chocolat/MOB_b roch_train_chocolat_20 19.pdf.

All three in the same day is just about possible – but with only 2 hours stopover at each of the three locations (imagine you need at least 2 hours to visit an attraction)

May not be good for the health! (around 13 hours journey)

I think we can make it work – Thanks for the help. I looked over the train schedule and it would be a super long day but since it would be our last day – We will probably just go for it and sleep all the way back to the United States on Sunday 🙂

Any highlights in Gruyeres we must see? I think that will be our lunch place so any great restaurants recommended?

    Thank you…

    Hi Cindy

Gruyeres village is a tiny place dotted with traditional Swiss restaurants and they’re all pretty good.

A good place for lunch is actually the restaurant at the Cheese factory that you would tour on that day anyway: http://www.lamaisondugruyere. ch/restaurant-en/la-maison-du-gruyere-restaurant

A little known fact about Gruyeres is that you can also visit the Giger (Alien museum) http://www.la-gruyere.ch/en/Z10276/m useum-giger. It is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.

Hope this helps and enjoy your stay!

    Maria.
