Easy/comfortable car route Grindelwald to Milan?

Short summary – read this first

Asharekh is planning a family road trip from Grindelwald to Milan in early August and is looking for advice on the best comfortable route. Several replies suggest using a car shuttle train through mountain tunnels for a smoother ride, as well as tips on road conditions and alternative routes.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the BLS Autoverlad Lotschberg railway car shuttle for a comfortable journey through tunnels instead of over the mountains.
  • Switzerland's roads are in good shape, but can be twisty, so drive carefully.
  • No pre-booking is required for the car shuttle train, so you can book on the day of travel.
  • Avoid the Gotthard motorway due to long traffic queues at the tunnel.

    Hi Asharekh,

By far the easiest and most comfortable way to travel across Switzerland is by train. 🙂

There aren’t too many way to avoid some of the mountain passes if that is what you are hoping to do?
There are some routes where you can out your car on a train and go through the mountain rather than over it. https://www.myswissalp s.com/car/cartrains

quickest way would be via Spiez and the BLS Autoverlad Lotschberg railway car shuttle trains through the Lotschberg and Simplon tunnels

    Thanks a lot.

I wonder how smooth is the ride while driving the car, on this route to Milan?

Also, Do I need to book the car shuttle train in advance? What would be the approximate cost one way?

what would be the alternative smooth ride if I do not use the car train shuttle?

    thanks again,

The road in Switzerland are in quite good shape. The roads can be quite twisty though.

The car prices can be found on the link from 1960man – no pre-booking is required.

The alternative route is via the Gotthard motorway, but that has a road tunnel which always has long queues as the traffic through the tunnel is regulated following fire in the tunnel a few years ago.
