I shall be driving a car with the family from Grindelwald to Milan in early August. I am looking for suggestions on the best and comfy route to take.

Hi Asharekh,

By far the easiest and most comfortable way to travel across Switzerland is by train. 🙂

There aren’t too many way to avoid some of the mountain passes if that is what you are hoping to do?

quickest way would be via Spiez and the BLS Autoverlad Lotschberg railway car shuttle trains through the Lotschberg and Simplon tunnels

I wonder how smooth is the ride while driving the car, on this route to Milan?

Also, Do I need to book the car shuttle train in advance? What would be the approximate cost one way?

what would be the alternative smooth ride if I do not use the car train shuttle?

The road in Switzerland are in quite good shape. The roads can be quite twisty though.

The car prices can be found on the link from 1960man – no pre-booking is required.

The alternative route is via the Gotthard motorway, but that has a road tunnel which always has long queues as the traffic through the tunnel is regulated following fire in the tunnel a few years ago.
