Hi everyone,

We have a confirmed train ticket on Eurocity 20 from Milan which gets us to Zurich at 6:51pm. We need to reach Grindelwald the same day as we have our confirmed accommodation at Grindelwald.

Q#1 : We see that there is a 7:02pm train from Zurich to Grindelwald. Will it be possible to catch this train in this narrow window ?

Q # 2 : Does anyone know on which platform Eurocity 20 from Milan arrives in Zurich ? The train to Grindelwald comes on Platform # 6.

Q # 3 : Is there an option to get down at one of the intermediate stops between Milan and Zurich, and take a bus/train to Grindelwald which can get us there a little earlier.

Hi Vineetha,

1. It should be possible. Swiss trains are usually on time, I don’t know about Eurocity. If you miss it, you can take the next one?
2. You haven’t give me a travel date, but I guess it will arrive on platform 8. You can see for yourself when you plan your trip with the Swiss timetable.
3. You will have to play with the timetable. Have a look at all the stations where your train stops and then see what the travel time is from a particular station. Best would have been to put Milan – Grindelwald in the timetable. You would have gotten the fastest option by default.

Hi Chantal,

Thanks for the prompt response !

We are travelling from Milan to Zurich on April 19th. Since we are not familiar with Zurich station, we weren’t sure if there will be sufficient time for us to get off from one train and board the next within a span of 10 minutes.

Are there different levels in Zurich Station ?

Our Eurocity booking does not show which platform it will arrive in Zurich – so wanted to be sure before booking the onward train ticket to Grindelwald. Since Swiss trains are always right on time, not sure to take the risk or not .

If we book on the 7:02pm train and miss it , are we allowed to board the next train which is at 8pm ?

Are there any bus services from Zurich to Grindelwald ?

Hi Vineetha,

Have you bought your ticket to Zurich already? I would follow Chantal’s advice and travel Milan to Grindelwald (you would have train changes along the way but it would be much quicker than traveling to Zurich and then backtracking to Grindelwald).

If you are set to go to Zurich, the timetable shows you arrive on platform 8 and the train to Grindelwald leaves on platform 31. An 11 minute connection is doable but you’ll have to walk quite quickly. Try to sit in the middle or back of the train from Milan and once off the train find the closest stairwell heading downstairs (don’t go to the front of the train station as you will get lost) 😉

Signs for platforms are quite good. Head downstairs as soon as possible and look for platform 31. If you buy a regular train ticket it will be good for any train that day so no big deal if you miss it. Just don’t buy a Supersaver ticket (shown on the timetable with a % sign) as they are good only for that departure time.

There are only bus services within Switzerland when there is no a train service (trains are lot more comfortable and usually faster anyway)!

Though we already bought tickets from Rome to Zurich, we can get down at Milan and catch another train to Grindelwald as you suggested to save time. Thanks for that suggestion.

Where and how do we book unreserved tickets to travel on *any* train to Grindelwald and can we book it in advance ?

If you want to book from Milan to Grindelwald you can do so here.
Are you planning on buying any rail passes to cover your trips within Switzerland? What is your itinerary in Switzerland like – they may be worthwhile.
