Crowds at Grindelwald (First) adventure activities

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Wengen at the end of July and start of August. Their main goal is to visit Jungfraujoch, then spend time at First, where they want to know about activity queues and whether 2.5 hours is enough for the adventure activities or a hike to Bachalpsee. They're also open to other suggestions after their visit to Jungfraujoch.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect long queues during high season for the adventure activities at First, especially for the First Flyer and Glider.
  • The 2.5 hours mentioned for hiking to Bachalpsee does not include breaks, so plan accordingly.
  • Aim to arrive early at Grindelwald to maximize your time and avoid long waits for activities.

    travelling in end July/Start august

based in Wengen and my plan is to take the 1st train up to jungfraujoch (if weather allows)

1143am train down to eigergletscher + eiger walk + lunch

1433pm train to grindelwald from kleine scheidegg

    1548pm arrive at First

    i have ~2.5hrs here. Should I:

    a) take part in the adventure activities (first glider, first flyer, first mountain cart, trottibike). Main question is will there be long queues in each activity at this timing? I would like to take it slow to enjoy the view on the mountain cart and trottibike.

Trottibike closes at 1800hrs. Does 1800hrs refer to the last person to ride the bike down or i have to reach the end point by 1800hrs?

Is 2.5hrs sufficient to complete all 4 activities?

    b) hike to bachalpsee and back (total 2.5hrs). Does 2.5hrs mentioned in the myswissalps bachalpsee guide include some time for taking a seat by the bachalpsee?

1830pm last cable car from First down to grindelwald firstbahn

I prefer option A because the trip for the gondola up to and down from First is free of charge. But main concern is the queues.

Or should I venture to other places after jungfraujoch? Open to suggestions. Preferably not the lauterbrunnen/muerren/schilthorn area because I’m thinking of covering all 3 areas within 1 day in a loop.

    Thank you

    Hi cc123,

There can be queues as you’ll be there in high season. This can vary by time and the weather, so hard to give a precise estimate. Times provided for any hikes listed at http://www.myswissalps.com/be rneseoberland/activiti es or our other pages are always pure hiking times, without breaks.

I don’t know the answers to your other questions, sorry. Please see here for things to do in the Jungfrau region and in the entire Bernese Oberland:

    Hi,

I looked at the pictures we took at Bort 2 years ago and one of them shows us taking our trottibikes and the clock above the rental place shows 18:12. We were at the gondola station in Grindelwald at about 18:50 , I remember this because I needed to get to the train station before 19:00 to find the turist desk open and it closed just in front of my eyes:) There will be someone at the gondola station in Grindelwald to receive the trottibikes.

edit: The queues for trotti – about 5 minutes, for mountain carts – about 20-25minutes. I don’t know for First Flyer or Glider , but I have read that they are much longer .

Hi cc123. Maybe after Jungfrau you could head to Interlaken and do a boat tour. Which is what we plan on doing and then another day go to Grindelwald early to avoid the queues and you could also have longer there. I’ve read they can be very busy for the glider and flyer. Hope this helps. 🙂
