Saver Day Pass: can I hop on any train with no seat reservation?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Hanch is planning to travel around Switzerland and wants to buy a Saver Day Pass for flexible train travel. They are unsure how the pass works, particularly regarding hopping on different trains without needing to reserve seats in advance.

Key takeaways:
  • With a Saver Day Pass, you can hop on and off most trains without additional seat reservations, but some scenic routes require them.
  • Be aware that some mountain transport routes are not included with the Saver Day Pass.
  • Check the Swiss Travel Pass guide for details about which routes require a seat reservation and for additional information on how the pass works.

hi-so after reading too much I realised for me it would the best to buy travel day pass – in advance (admitting that from yesterday to today the cost changed from 29f to 61f, and it is a shame! But, meanwhile- i would like to ask you how it works – since I buy a day and not a specific train! So I can hop on any train I want? Without concerning seat in advance?

Thank you so much for the lovely help and patience 🙂

    Hi HANCH,

If you have a Saver Day Pass, yes you can essentially just hop on and off any train.

There are some routes that are not included, this relates to many mountain transportation routes (though some are included).   Note also, that some routes require seat reservations, these will need to be purchased separately.  This applies to panoramic train routes like the Glacier Express or Bernina Express.

All explained in our Saver Day Pass guide in the link below, do take a read and watch the video too:

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Hi Hanch,

    I found your e-mail:

I bought a saver day pass…but at the SBB it says I need to buy ga card? Any idea what is it? Do I have to buy ga card as to use saver travel pass? Do I need to log in in the SBB web as for going on the train?

No, you don’t need any of that. The two steps I explained in your other thread are all there is to it: https://www.myswissalps.com/community/thread/confusin-about-train-from-zurich-to-zermatt-half-fare-or-day-pass/#post-2776560

SBB is a website geared to Swiss residents, so you may find information not relevant to you as a tourist. Please just follow the two steps, and you’ll be fine. No further logins or cards are needed.

    Enjoy your trip!
