    1. Last week of May, we plan to do a day trip to Mt Rigi by boat from Lucerne to Vitzna, to Rigi Kulm by cog wheel train and Cable car to Weggis and boat back to Lucerne. Is there sufficient time to cover what we plan to do? Where can I get the boat time table rom Lucerne and also the timetable for Rigi Kulm by cog wheel train and Cable car to Weggis.

    2. What other nearby areas that that are worth exploring?

Hi, just to add, from my own experience: took the train from Zurich to Arth Goldau, then the cog wheel train all the way up to Rigi Kulm. Then hiked down to the cable car station and took that down to Weggis, then the boat to Luzern. Left about 8am and we were done by about 5pm. This was in October, so it got dark early. I believe in May you’d have more hours of daylight. So, to answer your question, yes you should have plenty of time.

Or not . . . if the beauty up in the mountains distract you, you might end up staying too long 😉

    Enjoy!

    Hi John –

I enjoy the route that your are taking, finding the scenery coming up from Vitznau nicer that that coming up from Arth-Goldau. And, i really like the short but very scenic ride on the cableway.

Maria has linked the timetable, your invaluable companion for Swiss travel.

As explained on the opening page at the URL given, the timetable computer defaults to the fastest route between two points unless you insert a “via” ( way stop). To get it to show only boats, you must use the “advanced” timetable and turn off other modes. Often, boats don’t show up unless you do that, because they are not usually the fastest route between two points.

The boat is likely the fastest route to/ from Luzern and Weggis or Vitznau, so you may not need that extra step. If you have difficulty timing the cableway, use the name Weggis LSB ( Luftseilbahn).

Personally, I find the combination of a map, combined with the local timetable of the boats on Lake Lucerne, more useful for planning other trips around the lake ( der Vierwaldstättersee) area, than the SBB timetable. Purely a matter of personal preference; there is a map of sorts with the lake boat time table, too. The nice thing about the SBB timetable is that it gives you the information for the exact date of travel.

    map.search.ch/?pos=678424,209108&z=64 &poi=bergbahn,halteste lle,zug

The nice thing about that map is that it gives you the official name, usable in the timetable, for each station. Good in the cities, too. Mouse over the icon.

Icons are turned on and of from the menu ( star in a circle) for Points of Interest/ Traffic. For some reason the boat landings turn on and off with the bus stops.

Note the seasonal timetables. There is a change of schedules on May 24th.

Also, if you scroll down for a map, you get one that is upside down….viewed from the perspective of Luzern.

If you have considered walking in the area, this thread can lead you to some options and has a few pictures of the part that I like best:
