Hi Christine,
Welcome to the forum, thanks for joining MySwissAlps.
It’s good that you will be using the Swiss Travel Pass for your travels. If you are taking a direct train to Italy from Geneva, you can get a ticket in advance directly at the Geneva train station or any SBB train station. Just show your Swiss Travel Pass at the ticket counter and you will be issued with ticket to cover the Italian portion of your trip. So you can stay on the train without getting off at Domodossola.
Alternatively you can get a point-to-point ticket Domodossola to Venice online: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy
Hope this helps.
regards,
Anna

Hi Anna,
Thank you very much for the prompt reply.
Probably I will purchase an advance ticket via trainline.com for Domodossola to Venezia Santa Lucia to cover the Italy part.
Would you be aware if seat reservation is required for boarding at Geneve or is free to seat anywhere available?
Thank you.
Christine

Hi Christine,
Seat reservation is not necessary on Swiss trains, as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations. But reservations are usually required to travel on trains in Italy.

Anna

The recommendation for the Switzerland – Italy Eurocity trains is that if you travel all the way from somewhere in Switzerland across the border to somewhere in Italy is that you must have a reservation, because it is usually required within Italy.

Hello, Anna and 1960man:
We have the STP and will be traveling from Locarno to Milan on 9/10. When I purchase our train tickets for the Italy portion at the Locarno station, do we need seat reservations and do we change trains at Chiasso or continue on same train to Milano Centrale station? What is your recommendation as to purchasing advance tickets for the Chiasso-Milan part online or is it okay to wait and do this at the Locarno station?
TIA! I look forward to reading the Forum every day. It’s a wealth of helpful info.

Hi Bebe,
For travel from Locarno to Milan, you probably won’t need seat reservation as this is considered regional travel (Milan is part of the Arcobaleno integrated fare network). You can get your tickets from Chiasso – Milan directly from the Locarno train station or online: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

No need for any reservations.
Locarno – Milano Centrale is a direct regional service (route RE80) running every hour throughout the day. Departure from Locarno is at xx.25, for example 08.25

Thank you both for your quick responses and explanations. Exactly what we needed to know!
Relating to earlier forum posts and all your expert answers, we finally decided to take the Lotschberger base tunnel route from Interlaken/Spiez to Domodossola and Locarno on the Centovalli rail, now that it’s back in full operation, rather than the Luzern to Locarno route.
Thanks again for the help.
