Discounted Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ticket

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Varun is planning an 8-day trip to Switzerland in May and wants to purchase a Swiss Travel Pass. He has questions about obtaining a 50% discount for the Matterhorn Glacier Gondola, specifically whether the discount is available online or only at the counter, and how easy it is to get tickets on the day of his visit.

Key takeaways:
  • You can buy the discounted Matterhorn Glacier Gondola ticket at the ticket counter by presenting your Swiss Travel Pass.
  • It's advisable to purchase your gondola tickets on the day of your trip to avoid issues with the weather.
  • There are no ticket shortages for the gondola; they operate on a turn-up-and-go basis, so you can get tickets easily without pre-booking.

I will be traveling in Switzerland for 8 days in May 2023 and will buy a swiss travel pass for the duration. Based on the info available on this forum, I realized that I can get 50% discount for Matterhorn Glacier Gondola with swiss travel pass. However, when I check to book gondola tickets online, they do not show an option to select swiss travel pass to avail 50% discount. I will appreciate if someone can provide answers to these questions for my better planning 1) Do we get 50% discount on the gondola ride using swiss travel pass only at the gondola ticket counter only? 2) If so, how easy to get tickets on the day of the ride? I am worried if I will not get tickets to Matterhorn when the sole purpose of visiting Zermatt is to visit Matterhorn.

    Hi Varun elapro,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

That’s right, with the Swiss Travel Pass you can get 50% discount on the mountain transportation ticket to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. You can buy your discounted ticket online here: http://www.myswissalps.com/kleinmatterhorn/tickets

Tickets can also be purchased on the day from the valley station. Don’t forget to present your Swiss Travel Pass to get the discounts. You can find more information on how to use the Swiss Travel Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/howtouse

‘Tickets’ on services to Klein Matterhorn (or on the Gornergrat railway) will never ‘sell out’. All services operate on a turn up and go basis (with a queuing system which is absolutely normal for mountain railways

Last year we used this gondola in mid July. We went directly to the ticket counter (at about 1 pm) with our Swiss Travel Pass and bought tickets there. No queue. Everything was smooth and perfect!

    Hi Varun elapro,

You would be better off waiting to buy any mountaintop tickets until the day of travel. By buying them in advance, you risk being stuck with them even if the weather is bad. Most hotels will have camera displays of what it looks like above. Even if you buy tickets ahead, you will still have to ”check in”, and wait on any line at the valley station. The reason being that you will be issued what basically looks like a credit card to swipe, in order to board the gondolas. And to exit, as well. (Unless it’s been changed since I was there in September 2018.) There is no chance of running out, as the cars run constantly from morning til closing. Until you get to the larger tram at Trockener Steg, you’ll be in the smaller 6-8 people cars, again, running constantly. Have a great trip.

    Regards,

    Dajielsan
