A traveler named Rachbryn8 is looking for an app to download hiking maps for their upcoming trip. They want to know if there are specific apps available that can enhance their hiking experience in Switzerland.

    Hi Rachbryn8,

All our hiking pages allow you to download the coordinates as a KML file, to use in any app you like including Google Maps: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking. Apart from that there are a few links to hiking apps here: http://www.myswissalps.com/aboutswitzerland/practical/websites. Personally I use Schweiz Mobil.

    map.schweizmobil.ch/?lang=en&land=wanderland&route=all&layers=Wanderland&photos=yes&bgLayer=pk&logo=yes&detours=yes&season=summer&resolution=250&E=2631750&N=1189000

These are the official Swiss topo maps, with hiking trails highlighted. The same maps are available on a smartphone app, called « Suisse mobile » in Apple ‘s App Store (I am not sure if it is available if your mobile is not registered in Switzerland).

I’m a bit of a luddite (and a geographer) so I like my traditional paper maps, however there are a few ‘belt and braces’ ways of getting around on foot in Switzerland:

    1) Take a photo with your phone of walking maps that are usually on signboards at main gathering points (eg railway stations) in most tourist areas

    2) call up Schweizmobil via internet and just keep it on as you walk

    3) call up Schweiz mobile on a larger computer (eg laptop) at base camp and photograph the relavent bits on your phone

    4) Use the age old signboard maps then just follow the relevant yellow Wanderweg signs, with or without the back up of Google maps on your phone

As a reminder – here’s a google maps screen shot of the Wanderkarte map signboard at Filisur (GR):
