A traveler named Bellevue163 is preparing for a trip to Switzerland and wants to know about the best type of power adapter to use. They noticed two types of J plug adapters on Amazon and are unsure if both will work in Swiss outlets. The thread provides helpful guidance on the hexagon adapter being the right choice.
Key takeaways:
Opt for the hexagon-shaped plug adapter because it's the standard in Swiss outlets and ensures compatibility.
If you're unsure, the European two-prong plug often fits in Swiss outlets, but there may be exceptions.
Consider buying a universal adapter that works for multiple countries to avoid issues during your trip.

Must be the Hexagon one. In recent years all Swiss plugs have been going over to this type – there seems to have been quite a concerted effort to modernise with this type. I haven’t stayed anywhere in Swiss accomodation recently that didn’t have the hexagon version.

Hi Bellevue163
I went to Best Buy and bought a converter that had plugs for pretty much any country in Europe. I believe it cost me about $30 us. I put them in a plastic zip-lock bag and brought them all in for the ride. I believe there were 2 different ones that fit the Swiss rails/plugs. Unfortunately I left them on the Gotthard Express, plugged into the seat outlet….and had trouble finding anything in Switzerland that did not have a USB port adaptor. Some hotels may let you use theirs, as I believe someone in the forum wrote previously. It may be best to try to have one with you before you do go. Good luck, and have a great trip.

Thanks for info., the european two prong is very close, as the third swiss prong is a ground. But I read the eu plugs diameter is larger and it does seem about 1/4 inch wider apart.

No guarantees indeed. I have a portable outlet box (if that’s what it’s called in English) on the other end of the cord, so as long as it fits in one outlet I can connect all equipment for my portable office 🙂

If anyone needs, went with the THZY voltage converter with plug adapters, around $35 us, which has a hex eu main plug with 4 other adapters. And Ansmann 1250-0004 travel adapter plug eu-ch, around $8 us. Both had good ratings and on Amazon.
Thanks again for everyones expertise and help.
