Fronalpstock or Rigi for Lake Lucerne views, Sept

Short summary – read this first

Topher is planning a trip to Switzerland in September and wants to know whether to hike from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad or take the views from Fronalpstock/Klingenstock above Stoos. With only a few days to explore, he’s looking for the best advice on which option offers the most stunning views of Lake Luzern.

Key takeaways:
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass or a Saver Day Pass, you can travel to Rigi Kulm for free, making it a great option.
  • The ride to Fronalpstock offers a memorable experience with exceptional views, so consider this if you want adventure.
  • Check the mountaintop weather cams before heading out, as it can be sunny at the peaks even when it's raining in Luzern.

Want to see great views of Lake Luzern from someplace up high in the mountains and I’m wondering which views are better: Those along the hike from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad; or the views from Fronalpstock/Klingenstock above Stoos? Have a limited number of days for an anticipated September trip, so probably have to choose between one of these two.

    Hi Topher,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass or a Saver Day Pass, a trip to Rigi right to the very top is fully covered. These passes also offer free train trips up to Stoos. From Stoos to Fronalpstock or Klingenstock, you need additional tickets to use the chairlifts.

Both mountain tops offer excellent views of Lake Lucerne. I think if you’re looking for something memorable and adventurous I recommend the charlifts to Fronalpstock. Stoos is a small village and riding the rotating funicular also makes for a unique experience.

    Regards,

    Anna

I have not experienced the views from Fronalpstock, but the views of Lake Lucerne from the trails on Rigi are absolutely stunning.

    Hi Tropher

Personally, I would prefer the view from Fronalpstock! However, the view from Pilatus is also absolutely brilliant and should be included in the selection.

Topher – Be sure to check the mountaintop weather cams before you head out. We’ve encountered rainy weather in Luzern but clear weather at the top of Pilatus, Stans, and other nearby locations. Of course, that usually blocks the lake view, but is scenic in a different way with the high peaks emerging from a sea of clouds.
