Confused about Glacier Express seat and ticket

Short summary – read this first

John Daly is planning to take the Glacier Express on September 16 and is a bit confused about the booking process. He wants to know how to guarantee both a seat reservation and a ticket, given the different timelines for booking each. Several travelers offer tips on navigating the reservations and ticketing.

Key takeaways:
  • Make a seat reservation three months in advance to secure your spot on the Glacier Express.
  • If you're using the Swiss Travel Pass, you don't need to purchase a separate ticket; it covers your travel.
  • The booking system allows you to indicate if you already have a seat reservation when purchasing your ticket later on.

I want to take the glacier express on sept 16 2019. I read and understand that I need a seat reservation AND a ticket. It seems though I can reserve my seat up to 3 months in advance but I can only buy my ticket 2 months in advance?? This is confusing??.. If I get a seat reservation 3 months in advance how to i guarantee that i get an actual ticket 2 months in advance??? Any suggestions on how i can get a guaranteed seat AND ticket for sept 2019… I am prepared to be online exactly 3 months to the minute before the date but that will only get me the seat???.. Any help would be apreciated

I don’t pay extra for Glacier Express as I only travel the same line on ordinary trains which are just as good, so I don’t know…

    but…

I presume that the seat reservation is the thing that locks you into a booking – you couldn’t ‘miss the train because you haven’t got the ticket as – if you reserve a seat, that seat would not be available to anyone else in the time between the seat purchase and the ticket purchase date – so I can’t see how there would be a problem.

One way round the problem is to purchase a Swiss Travel Pass that I believe can be bought an unlimited time in advance of travel

    hi..

    thanks for the reply

I guess my confusion is that I seem to be able to book my seat 3 months in advance which is fine… I now have a confirmed place to sit.. HOWEVER if try to book my ticket there does not seem to be any way, at least from the glacier express site, to indicate that I already have a seat reservation??? so in otherwords…. If I go in today and try to book a ticket for Feb 5th lets say, assuming I bought my seat last month, I do not see any way to indicate that and I seem to be forced to make another seat reservation. There does not seem to be any way to indicate I already have a seat reservation.. anyway … thanks for the quick reply I will see what anyone else has to say but this seems quite confusing to sell a seat one month and wait an entire 30 days to get a ticket!!!

    regards

You can make reservations without a ticket. People who use the Swiss Travel Pass don’t need a ticket. You can buy a ticket for that route half an hour before you board the train. The ticket only provides you the means to travel between A and B on a particular day. It doesn’t say WHICH train you are travelling on. It’s the same price whether you take the GEX or regular trains. The reservations secures you a seat on the GEX and allows you to board the train.

The booking process at shop.glacierexpress.ch gives you the option (later in the process) to indicate if you already have a ticket or are using some form of pass.

    Relax.

    Hi John,

Glad to see that 1960man and Rockoyster helped you out. Be sure to think twice before buying a ticket for the Glacier Express. As explained, you don’t need a ticket with the Swiss Travel Pass. A ticket is quite expensive and when looking at all travel plans combined, most people buy either a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card to save money over the option of buying regular full priced tickets for each trip.

    thank you Arno

This is the only train ride we will take so I do not believe it will be cheaper to get the travel pass but thank you for the links

    Hi John,

I see, you might be right then, but still a day pass may save a lot of money as a regular ticket for the full ride is more than CHF 150. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass for details. Also be sure to take into account your transportation to/from the start/end of the Glacier Express ride.

In any case, enjoy your trip!
