Hello again. We are planning to go to Mt Pilatus in July next year, I have been seeing this Golden Round Trip excursion to Mt Pilatus. I have read that starting from Kriens is better than Alpnachstad if you want to avoid the crowd. I think that’s what me and my friends are going to do. I’m a little confused on what the Golden Round Trip means.

1. Is Golden Round Trip a package for tourists? Does it make more sense or is it cheaper to buy individual tickets when we get to the stations or buy them in advance (bus, gondola, cableway, cogwheel, and boat)?

2. Is Golden Round Trip included in Swiss Travel Pass? If not, is it cheaper to buy the Golden Round Trip in advance? If we buy the tickets individually, are they all included in the Swiss Travel Pass?

3. For the Golden Round Trip, is there a time that we have to be at the stations or time that we have to leave/go back?

4. We also plan on stopping at Frankmuntegg to do the Toboggan run before going up to Mt Pilatus. Is this stop included in the Golden Round Trip?

That’s great you are planning a trip to Pilatus next July!

In answer to your questions.

1. The Golden Round Trip is for anyone who would like to experience a variety of experiences (as per the ones you listed). It’s typically available from June to October. You can start from either Kriens or Alpnachstad. Summer is peak season, so it’s likely to be busy either way. Just work with what suits your itinerary.

2.With the Swiss Travel Pass, not entirely covered. Please see below:

• Cableway/train from Kriens or Alpnachstad to Pilatus: 50% off
• Train to Lucerne or Alpnachstad: free
• Bus from Lucerne to Kriens:free

Don’t buy your mountain transport ticket too early, in case of bad weather. You’ll be fine to buy your ticket a day in advance, once you know the weather is fine (https://www.myswissalps.com/weather/forecast).

3. No, but all up you will need around 4.5 to 5 hours, so just use the SBB timetable so you can plan the excursion.

4. Yes, this is possible. You can stop off at Fräkmüntegg and continue on afterwards with your Golden round trip.
