Gotthard car train schedule and pricing in May

Short summary – read this first

Brendan is planning to travel by an open air old timer car from Erstfeld to Bodio on May 5. He wants to know about waiting times for the car-rail service through the Gotthard Tunnel and whether the tunnel length differs for car-hauling trains compared to passenger trains.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect potential waiting times for the car-rail service, as it can be busy on weekends.
  • The Gotthard Pass typically opens in late May or early June, so check conditions closer to your travel date.
  • Contact a Swiss Old Timer club for specific advice and support regarding your vehicle.
  • Consider alternative routes like using the Lötschberg and Simplon tunnels for car transportation.

I have been searching for more specific information and have found nothing on the internet. I will board the train with an open air old timer car in Erstfeld and exit at Bodio on May 5, 2020. I understand 65 cars at a time are taken, is there always a long waiting line. If one has to wait could it be, hours and hours. The driving Gotthard Tunnel is not an option–possible breakdown of old timer car would make the news for backing up traffic! What is the length of the trip thru the tunnel–20 minutes I have read but I would think that is for a passenger train only and not a car hauler. Thank you in advance for the information. Brendan

    Hello Cobra,

I am not sure you can do this. Since the road tunnel is open all year round, the car-rail option as far as I know is not available on the Gotthard. Car service is available on four rail tunnels: http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/auto-velo/car-trains.html

So your options are: cross the Gotthard by the pass (not sure it will be possible in May), or use the car-rail service of the Lötschberg and Simplon tunnels.

The Gotthard tunnel is available for freight (containers and trucks). That is a highly professional service a bit outside the scope of MySwissAlps, the moderators will correct me if I’m wrong : http://www.hupac.ch/EN/Circulation-schedule-61365f00

You might also contact a Swiss Old Timer club such as Swiss Classics (info@swissclassics. com)

    I wish you a good time !

    Hello Brendan,

in addition to the previous answers, Gotthard Pass opens only usually late May (early June), so that is not an option either.

Where are you starting your journey from? Is it Erstfeld? And what is your final destination? You might need to make a detour.
