Is it better to visit Grindelwald in late May or early September?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip back to Grindelwald after a previous visit in April where poor weather impacted their experience. They want advice on whether to visit in the last week of May or early September for better weather and to make the most of their four-day itinerary focused on activities and sights in the Jungfrau region.

Key takeaways:
  • Visit Grindelwald in September for better weather and more activities available.
  • Consider that high-altitude trails may still be closed in late May, which could limit hiking options.
  • Layer up for varying temperatures, as weather can still be unpredictable even in September.

Hi,I went to Grindelwald last time in end of April, but the weather wasn’t co-operating. Very foggy at First & Harder Kulm. The trail to Bachalpsee was completely blocked by snow, and all adventures (First Flyer/Glider) were closed. Luckily my experience in the following two days at Giessbach Falls and Panoramabrücke Sigriswil offered some of the scenery and hiking I wanted.

I’m thinking of re-doing Grindelwald again in 2025 to catch up the mountain scenes I missed last time. Would it be better to do it in the last week of May, or early September?

There would be 4 days and below are preliminary plans

    Day 1 First + Lauterbrunnen

Day 2 Eiger Express to Jungfraujoch

    Day 3 Spiez and/or Thun

Day 4 Interlaken ost and Brienz

Any comments are welcome. Thank you.

    Hi

I believe September is far better than May as far as the weather goes. Most, if not all, activities will still be open for business as well. The weather, generally speaking, is nice. This year, however, when I was there (mid Sep-early Oct), it was colder than my last two trips. But not where it disturbed my trip. I still wore shorts the whole trip and had enough ‘layers’ with me to still be comfortable. But again, the important thing is the activities still being open. Have a great trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    Hi TomUK,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

If you plan to do some mountain hiking in the Jungfrau region, I recommend visiting in September. I think most high altitude trails would still be inaccessible in late May.

Please have a look at this link for tips about the best time to visit: https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/practical/best-time-to-visit/

    Hi Tom,

    Another vote here for September.

This post earlier this year from a long-time regular visitor to Wengen might be of interest to you:
