Help me with wine tours in Montreux / Vevey

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a 21-day rail trip in Switzerland and wants to spend the last 5 days exploring vineyards. They are seeking advice on the best city for vineyard access, recommendations for wine tours and experiences, and transportation options to the vineyards. This is their first visit to Switzerland, so any help is appreciated.

Key takeaways:
  • Stay in Montreux or Vevey for easy access to the Lavaux vineyard region.
  • Consider joining an organized tour like 'Vine Stories: Lavaux & Lutry' for a guided wine walk.
  • For a unique experience, look for wine tastings paired with local cheeses and gastronomy.

My wife and I are doing a 21 day Switzerland rail trip, and the final 5 days we want to dedicate only to Switzerland winery’s.

    1) What is the best city to stay to have the easiest access to the best vineyards? Montreux? Lausanne?

    2) Any recommendations on the best wine tours, vineyards, or routes to enjoy as much as possible?

    3) How do people get to the vineyards? Taxi, or buses, or booked tours?

    4) Are there any really good wine “experiences” like restaurants, tastings, or wine and cheese picnics etc we should put on the list?

We’ve never been to Switzerland, so any help would be much appreciated.
