Hi, would really appreciate your insight into my situation here choosing between train passes. Initially, we were doing most of our travel in the Berner Oberland area with a short stay in Lucerne too. Thus, I got the Half Fare & Berner Oberland Pass (BOP 6 day). For the youth, I got them the BOP alone since they now sell it discounted without Half Fare needed. With itinerary change to now 2 days in Lucerne (city, Pilatus), 6 days based in Wengen (Interlaken/Niederhorn, Murren, Schilthorn, Grindelwald), 4 days in Montreux/Lutry then traveling out through Basel to France, we have significant areas outside of BOP coverage.
My question is with a Swiss Travel Pass (STP) instead, are there a lot of features in the Berner area free with BOP but not the STP? Does the STP cover the cable cars like Grindelwald ones or Niederhorn for free or would it be just discounted? I’m guessing the more I do outside the central Berner Oberland area the less advantage the BOP will have.

Yes, if your plans have shifted to cover more travel outside of the Berner Oberland region, it could make sense to opt with the Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/).
You’ll find generally that with the Swiss Travel Pass, all mountain excursions (Niederhorn, Grindelwald First in your case) will be discounted. If you look at the Swiss Travel Pass coverage map, all lines that are broken/dotted indicate this route will be discounted. Here’s the direct link to map:
There are a few exceptions, either they are free altogether or not covered at all. Again take a look at the map for more details.
As you are traveling to France via Basel, with the Swiss Travel Pass, all travel is covered within Switzerland, so you would only need a ticket from Basel to wherever in France. More details on travel to/from France here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/france-switzerland/
The only way to be sure is to carry out maths, if indeed it would make sense to go with the Swiss Travel Pass.
