Help with Grindelwald for 3 days in April

Short summary – read this first

A couple is traveling to Switzerland in early April, staying in Grindelwald for three full days. They want advice on snowy summit tours, adventure activities, moderate hikes, weather expectations, and transportation to Lugano, as it's their first visit.

Key takeaways:
  • Visit Jungfraujoch for stunning snow and ice experiences, but check for activity availability as some attractions may be closed in early April.
  • Pack warm clothes, as temperatures can be around freezing on the mountains, while Grindelwald may be milder at 10-12°C.
  • Consider taking the train instead of a car for transfers, as it's easier and more convenient in Switzerland.
  • Be aware that some mountain villages might be quieter and some restaurants may close by mid-April, so check opening dates in advance.

My husband and I are traveling to Switzerland early April. We are staying in Grindlewald for 3 full days. A few questions and help please!

    1) best location to experience a summit, icy snow top type tour? Also best location for the adventure activities (paragliding/mountain carting etc)

    2) hiking – wanting to do a moderate half day hike, which ones are best?

    3) weather in early April. We are from Texas, how cold will it be early April, should I pack snow type clothes?

    4) is it worth taking a day trip to murren or the other small mountain towns, will things be open?

    5) we are transferring to Lugano from Grindlewald, should we do car or train?

ANY OTHER TIPS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! this is our first time!

    Hi Littlekasey1,

    1. Well Jungfraujoch certainly seems the best idea for snow and ice at any time of year: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch. Do note that some activities like mountain carting may not be possible in April – still winter at higher altitudes
    2. See here for our suggestions: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion/activitie s – at this time of year it will be limited due to snow at higher alittudes in the mountains. Ski season is just ending.
    3. If you are going up to the mountain top for awhile be prepared for temperatures around freezing. Grindelwald itself could be pleasant at around 10 or 12 but that is probably quite cold for a Texan.
    4. The villages are all open certainly but by mid-April it will be quiet and some restaurants/hotels may close. Mountains are mostly open but could be closed temporarily for maintenance (this is low season). See Schilthorn closing dates here for example: http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/gettingthere
    5. Always train in Switzerland. 🙂

Be sure to check mountain opening dates as in April it is hit and miss. See a list here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/naturalsites/ mountains – click the mountain and then the “route” tab for details
