Help with trip to Zermatt from Milan

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is seeking advice on purchasing train tickets to Zermatt from Milan Central Station for September 9, 2023. They have a Swiss Travel Pass and need to know about train schedules after discovering the Trenitalia (EC 50) isn't available that day, leading them to consider less convenient bus options. They're looking for a train leaving Milan between 06:30 and 07:30 to Domodossola.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the SBB timetable for disruptions; there will be replacement buses between Milan and Domodossola from August 21 to September 10 due to engineering work.
  • Consider entering your route as Milan – Brig in the SBB timetable for alternative train options.
  • If carrying luggage, prepare for possible multiple changes during your journey to Zermatt.

I need advice and assistance on purchasing a train tickets to Zermatt from Milan Central train station on 09-09-23. I have a Swiss rail pass for my stay in Switzerland and from taking advantage of the forum, I’ve discovered that I only need a train ticket from Milan to Domodosolo. My problem is that I first started tracking a Trenitalia (EC 50) leaving Milan Central Station at 07:20 and arriving in Domodossola at 08:43. Now the last date that this is scheduled is 20-08-23. I’m not sure what changed as on September 09, 2023 this train (EC 50 ) isn’t available or other trains. All I seem to see is bus transportation with multiple stops and bus changes. My wife and I both have a suitcase and carry on luggage making it difficult getting on and off. Can someone help find a train schedule leaving Milan around 06:30 to 07:30 going to Domodosolo for me to purchase and then the Swiss rail pass on to Zermatt on 09-09-23.

    Thank you

I have a similar problem, can’t find the direct Eurocity train from Brig to Milano Centrale on Sept 7, which would make it a lot easier to then get to Varenna. Like you, I find this train last available date online on all sites (Trenitalia, Raileurope, Trainline) is August 20. I can’t find an answer to this online, but I presume if there is no schedule for September already that these trains do not run. Doubtful that at this time we will see these pop up. Would appreciate a response from someone with knowledge about this.

    Hi Dpkudro,

    Hi PRtraveler,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

According to SBB timetable, there will be disruption to train services between Milan and Domodossola from 21 Aug 2023 to 10 Sept 2023 due to engineering work.

During this period, there will be replacement buses to take passengers travelling between Milano Centrale and Domodossola (I). You can also check other available connections on the SBB timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable. If you enter your route as Milan – Brig, the timetable will display a few possible options.

Information about tickets from Italy to Switzerland is available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

    Hope this helps.

    regards,

    Anna

    Hi jgsfitness,

The train journey from Como to Zermatt indeed include multiple train changes. You can plan ahead by checking train schedules and information on the SBB timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable. For useful tips on how to travel with luggage, you can find details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage.
