Wild camping near Grindelwald in May – possible locations?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a special hiking trip in the Swiss Alps for their partner's 30th birthday from May 15th to 18th. They are looking for trail recommendations and camping options, particularly around the Grindelwald area but are unsure if the trails will be open and where they can actually camp. They also need info about huts along the way.

Key takeaways:
  • Wild camping is not allowed near Bachalpsee; you will face fines if caught.
  • The Grindelwald trails might be inaccessible until mid-June, so plan alternative hikes around Lake Brienz or Lake Thun instead.
  • Look for campgrounds near the lakes for a great camping experience and easier access to hiking trails.

    Hi!
I’m planning a trip for my partner and I for his 30th birthday. He has a dream to hike and free camp in the swiss alps. My partner is very experienced on hiking and free camping, he’s been on week-long hikes every year. We’re both in good shape to complete a strenuous hike.

I’ve booked the flight so we’ll arrive to Zürich  9AM on May 15th and leave at noon 18th of May. I like the hike between Grindelwald and Bachalpsee, but it seems the trail might not be open yet and that it’s forbidden to camp along the trail, is that correct? I’m having a hard time to find information about the camping and what trails are allowed to camp along. I would like some recommendations on good camping spots and if there are any specific trails that are better for camping? It would also be interesting with huts along the way. I’ve found this site but having trouble to find huts that are open during the applicable dates https://www.sac-cas.ch/en/huts-and-tours/sac-route-portal/.

    Hi Frida,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Wild camping is not allowed around Bachalpsee. You will be fined if caught camping in the vicinity. For more information, please have a look at our camping page here: https://www.myswissalps.com/accommodation/camping/

I think May would still be too early for hiking on Grindelwald First.  The mountain trails aren’t usually accessible until mid-June. I would recommend staying in one of the many campgrounds near Lake Brienz or Lake Thun and plan your hikes around the lakes. You can find some good suggestions here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-blog/

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Anna
