Hiking Engelberg to Meiringen

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a hike from Engleberg to Meiringen, using cable cars and lifts to make the journey easier. They want to know if transportation is available from Jochpass to Engstlenalp in early July and if they can complete the route in one day with both lifts and hiking. It's great that they modified their trip based on prior advice!

Key takeaways:
  • All lifts should be operational in early July unless there's bad weather.
  • The hike can be done in one day, but make sure you start early and are comfortable with long descents.
  • Check the Titlis website for the latest information on lifts and trail conditions.
  • There is bus transportation available from Engstlenalp for your return trip.

    Hello,

So, we’ve modified our trip using your help and the website, but still had a couple questions regarding the hike from Engleberg to Meiringen (green trail, section C8). We’re hoping to be able to take cable cars/lifts from Engleberg to Jochpass, and then over to Engstlenalp.

Based on information I’ve found, I think that we can take a lift up to Trebusee, and then hike over to reach a lift to take us up to Jochpass. Once at Jochpass, is transportation available to reach Engstlenalp? We think that if we take the lifts/transportation for the first half of this section, we’ll be able to hike the second half to reach Meiringen.

Can you tell me if this transportation is available in early July and if this route is possible to cover in one day (using both transportation options and hiking)?

    Thanks!

    Hi MLS2010,

All lifts should be open early July, unless there’s exceptional weather. The route can certainly be covered in a day, but it depends on your experience. For some it would be too much, for others it’s easy. If the long descent is no problem for you, it’s certainly doable (see the other topic). Take your time and start early. All information about lifts, current trail conditions, can be found on the Titlis website. They also provide maps like this one. There’s a bus from Engstlenalp down; it should be in the timetable.

Take the trails to the right leaving Engstlenalp. Stay high. The walk down from Jochpass is mild all the way to Reuti. Cable from there down if you need to beat the clock.

Thanks so much! We’ll be sure to start early, but it’s good to know there is transportation if we make too many stops or fall behind.

You say take the trails to the right; is that part of the Green Trail (section C8) … or should we be looking for different signage? Does it still goes through those same towns (Engstlenalp, Balmeregghorn, Planplatten, then down to Reuti)?
