Hiking in late May in the Wengen area

Short summary – read this first

Misty Rose and her husband will be in Wengen from May 28-31. They usually visit Switzerland in summer but had to change their plans this year and are concerned about the Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and Frist to Bachalpsee Lake trails being closed due to snow in late May. They're looking for advice on other open trails at higher elevations.

Key takeaways:
  • Check local weather updates on arrival for the most accurate trail conditions.
  • The Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg trail is typically closed until mid-June due to snow.
  • Consider using the Wengen-Männlichen Aerial Cableway to access beautiful views and trails despite potential closures.
  • Explore lower elevation trails in the valley, which may still offer incredible hiking experiences.

My husband and I will be staying in Wengen May 28-31. We normally travel to Switzerland in July or August but unfortunately our work schedules this year only allow for the last week in May. We like to hike the Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg trail and the Frist to Bachalpsee Lake trail. I realize you can’t predict the weather but are these trails normally closed at that time of year? Suggestions for trails that may be open in the higher elevations? Thanks in advance!

Hello Misty Rose and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Why not explore an area in a different season?!

Find options for hikes in the Wengen, Jungfrau Region in below link:

As the weather is different every year, it makes sense asking upon arrival, which trails are open, as this can be quite short-term.

Our membre Kim has a very detailed, wonderful thread about the Wengen area. I’m sure you’ll also find lots of inspiration there:

    Best and happy hiking.

There have been a number of recent threads about the trail in May. Here’s part of one.

”Summer operations Wengen to/from Männlichen 11 May June to 27 October 2019. The lifts Grindelwald Grund to/from Männlichen will not resume operation until 20 December 2019 due to V-Bahn construction.. Bus service is available from Grund to Männlichen beginning 22 June to 13 October 2019. See http://www.myswissalps.com/mannlichen/gettingthere for operating hours.

(Note: the Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk is usually closed until mid-June due to snow)”

But with the weather changes the past year, who knows.

Thanks Steph! We have visited the area in July, August, September and October. Would love to being going during one of those months but that’s not possible this year. We have also explored the alpine areas of Andermatt and Zermatt. Your Swiss hiking trails are truly amazing no matter where we go. So disappointed that our two favorite trails will be closed while we are there though. We will still enjoy the lower elevations and valley. It’s beautiful from all vantage points. Thanks again!

Thanks plonk! At least we will be able to use the Wengen–Männlichen Aerial Cableway. That information is very useful. We saw that it was still snowing in wengen just a few days ago and that the higher elevations got 5-6 inches. So we aren’t very hopeful the trails will be open. Hoping for some really warm weather and strong sunshine to melt that snow. Thanks again!
