    Hi to everyone,

After cancelling our trip in 2020 (like nearly everyone else) we are finally booked again to head to Switzerland in a couple of months.

We will be basing ourselves in Bonaduz, Brunnen, Ringenberg, Murten & Kandersteg.

We have done a fair bit of research but just wondering on top of that if anyone can suggest any lesser known sightseeing & hiking gems in any of these areas, we have given ourselves a decent amount of time in each location. Any feedback would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi Tone,

It’s great to know that finally you get to travel to Switzerland. I’m sure you are excited.

There are lots of possibilities for hiking in the places you mentioned. Here are my personal recommendations:

    • Kandersteg – Any trails starting from Oeschinensee
    • Brunnen – Take the ferry to Rütli and hike to Seelisberg
    • Murten – Follow the vineyard trail from Sugiez to Motier.

For more hiking possibilities, you can use this link to look for hiking trails by region: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking

    Hope this helps!

    Hey Tone,

In the Brunnen region, the funicular to Stoos might not be a hidden gem anymore, but it’s worth it! South of Brunnen and Lake Lucerne, there is Lake Arni. I haven’t been yet myself but I think it might be a gem: arnisee.ch.

We have not taken our trip yet, but one idea I floated to the forum a while back got an enthusiastic response — The Romainmôtier Heritage Trail between Croy-Romainmôtier and La Sarraz. You might take a look and see if it is the kind of hiking you’d be interested in.

    Hi Anna,

Yes, we are super excited, tweaked our itinerary a bit from a couple of years ago (a couple of extra years of planning can lend itself to a whole lot of extra possibilities😀). Thanks for your suggestions, Oeschinensee trails are definitely on our radar but your other suggestions for Brunnen & Murten have really got us interested so thanks for that, will be looking into them further.

    Hi Arno,

Thanks for suggesting Lake Arni, looks really interesting & certainly a place I hadn’t come across in my research. We are pretty keen to go & have a look, also appears to have a number of different trails to explore so right up our alley.

    Hi Dan,

Certainly hadn’t heard of this one so I had a look & found it to be a very pretty trail, definitely putting that one on our list so thanks for that. Already planning to do the gorge trail from Vallorbe to Orbe & so we will already be pretty close by.

From Bonaduz head up the RhB railway route towards Disentis (the Vorderrhein valley). Some nice walks along the valley and in the side valleys (all ‘off the beaten’ track except perhaps Vals which is a well know spa)

From Murten you have the Bielersee and Lac de Neuchatel , and anywhere in the beautiful Swiss Jura mountains

It is always worth scouting around on the Swiss national map ‘Swissgeo’ which goes from very small scale up to very large local scale:

    Hi 1960man,

Thanks for your input, heading out the Disentis way sounds like a great idea. You had me hooked when you said “off the beaten track”😁
