Hiking the Liechtenstein Trail: getting there

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a hiking trip on the Lichtenstein Trail in September and needs help with train options from Zurich airport. They want to spend 5-7 days traveling through Switzerland afterward, focusing on local sights and cultural experiences. This is their first time in Switzerland, and they hope to make the most of their journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Take an intercity train from Zurich airport to Sargans for a quick trip to the Lichtenstein Trail's starting point.
  • You can use the Swiss Travel Pass for certain train and bus routes in the area.
  • Plan your train and bus timings using the SBB timetable for smooth travel.
  • Consider checking various trail stages and local attractions for your post-hike itinerary.

MY wife and I are planning on hiking the Lichtenstein Trail in September 2023. My initial plan is to fly into Zurich and take a train to a starting point in Lichtenstein for the trail. Can someone recommend the best train to take from the Zurich airport? Post hiking we would like to spend 5-7 days in Switzerland taking a train in the Alps and perhaps some boat rides. We will need to obtain train information and recommendations for lodging. This is our first trip into Switzerland (hopefully not our last as we are both in our middle 70’s) and we enjoy cultural sites and visiting cites and towns that locals could recommend. I know our questions are quite broad but I would believe that this forum can give us suggestions.

Our itinerary after the trail is open. We have toured many European cities and countries and are hoping to maximize our time in Switzerland – thank you in advance for any information that someone can provide to us.

The trail officially starts in the south at Balzers. The jumping off point for Liechtenstein is Sargans, which is a fast journey from Zurich on an inter city train. A range of bus routes into Liechstenstein depart from the railway station at Sargans

Thank you. Am I understanding you correctly that, after taking an inner city train from the Zurich airport, we could take a bus from the Sargans’ railway station to the trail start at Blazers? Thank you for your response.

Yes, faster journey time about 1 hour 45 min: take the first available train Zurich Flughafen – Zurich HB, then the first available inter city fast train Zurich HB – Sargans (avoid the slower trains). Walk out of Sargans station and you will see all the buses lined up

    Hello indigo1948,

You may find this link useful for the Liechtenstein Trail. There are various stages to the trail, so depending which or all of the stages you are wanting to hike, you can read more here.

I am unsure if you are intending to buy a rail pass for your travels but in case you were thinking about traveling around too in Liechtenstein, some destinations are included with the Swiss Travel Pass. More information here, including the Swiss Travel Pass coverage map :

In regard to reaching Liechtenstein from Zurich airport: yes, board a train to Zurich main station, there on, another train to Sargans and then the relevant bus to Liechtenstein. Use the timetable so you can plan your route accordingly: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

For your post hike trip to Switzerland, here are some ideas which should get you started. Happy planning!

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
