A traveler named Kevin is planning to spend a day in Chur and is looking for suggestions on how to best fill about 8 hours. He’s interested in dining options and is considering taking a cable car out of the city before he catches the Bernina train the next morning.
Key takeaways:
Visit the Restaurant drei Bünde in the old town for a taste of genuine Swiss cuisine.
Take the RhB train to Arosa or the Swiss Grand Canyon for great excursions.
Check out the city's E-Guide for more activity suggestions.
If you choose the cable car, consider the one to Brambuesch for lovely meadowland at 2100 meters altitude.

Late morning until mid evening in Chur. Any ideas on how best to spend 8 or so hours in Chur? Please include great lunch and/or dinner ideas. We are leaning toward taking the cable car up and out of the city. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas and suggestions. We catch the train/Bernina the next morning!
For restaurants and cafés, I usually use Google Maps and check the reviews there. I found that everything with at least 20-30 reviews, and a review point above 4,5 should be a good one.
Chur is not all that close to the very high mountains so it is not known for cable cars, but there is one – up to Brambuesch. It is not very well known but it will take you to some pleasant peaceful meadowland at around 2100 metres asl
You could also travel the short distance by RhB railway train to the Swiss Grand Canyon (aka Rhein Gorge), or go up to Arosa on the RhB train for lunch and back.
I recommend the Restaurant drei Bünde in the old town. Genuine Swiss cuisine
Thanks for the tips on the E-Guide and the Rhein Gorge and Arosa. I will definitely research time and distance to those two sites. I was not aware of them so what a great tip! Kevin
I second a trip to Arosa. If time allows you could go up the Weisshorn by cable car: you’ll have a beautiful view, all the way to Chur. A 360 degree view in fact.
Thanks again to all. Two votes for Arosa seals the deal! We are investigating all the how and whens and where’s for Arosa. So looking forward to our trip!! Only @7 weeks to go!. Best to all and happy trails, Kevin and Judy Gallagher
Another vote for the Chur-Arosa train trip.. A single journey takes only 1 hour so I think you’ll have more than enough time for this excursion. You can find more details here: http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/experiences/arosa-line/
