Should I select my Swiss Half Fare Card start date during purchase?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Subrata plans to buy a Swiss Half Fare Card this month to use starting on March 28, 2026. They want to know if they can set this date closer to their arrival in Switzerland, in case their travel plans change. Guidance on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Key takeaways:
  • You must select the start date for the Swiss Half Fare Card at the time of purchase.
  • You can order Saver Day Passes with discounts even before purchasing the Swiss Half Fare Card.
  • Make sure to have both your valid Swiss Half Fare Card and Saver Day Passes when traveling.

    Hi All,

I intend to purchase a Half Fare Travel Card this month which I will use effective from 28.03.2026. Buying it now will enable me to get discounts on the Saver Day Passes which I am planning to buy once the Half Fare Card has been procured. What I would like to know is whether at the time of purchase of the Half Fare Travel Card I need to select the date from which this would be used (which in my case it would be 28.03.2026), or whether I can set this date closer to my entry into Switzerland just in case there is a change in my travel plans. Your guidance in this matter will be much appreciated.

    Regards

    Hi Subrata!

Just to make sure we’re on the same page: do you mean the Swiss Half Fare Card for tourists? The Half Fare Travelcard is a different product, intended for residents of Switzerland:

Yes, you’ll have to select the pass’s start date when purchasing it. But that’s no problem at all: you can already order Saver Day Passes with 50% reduction, without having bought the Swiss Half Fare Card. All that matters is that you can show both your Saver Day Passes and your valid Swiss Half Fare Card when traveling.  So even if you get your Swiss Half Fare Card shortly before your departure to Switzerland, you’ll be fine :-).

Thanks a lot, Annika for clarifying my doubt. Yes, my requirement is for the Swiss Half Fare Card for tourists.
