Is the Swiss Half Fare Card worth it for 3 nights?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Jennar is planning a 3-night trip to Switzerland, traveling from Zurich to Murren via Lauterbrunnen, and then to Venice. They want to know if the Swiss Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass would offer better value for their excursions to Schilthorn and Trummelbach Falls.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass as it includes the Schilthorn excursion for free and is more convenient.
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card can be beneficial depending on your travel plans, even for a single day.
  • Trummelbach Falls is not covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and costs around CHF11.
  • Make sure to check the SBB Timetable for train schedules, as this is a major route you will travel.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers cable car and tramway fares to Murren, so you can plan accordingly.

Would it be worth it to purchase the half fare card if we are only spending 3 nights in Switzerland? We will only be traveling from Zurich to Murren (via Lauterbrunnen) , and then Murren to Venice 2 days later. The only excursions we are booking are the Shilthorn and Trummelbach Falls. Would the card also work for bike rentals?

    Hi Jennar,

It’s not so much the number of nights, but rather the amount of traveling. The Swiss Half Fare Card can even be worth it for a single day if a long expensive trip is planned. In your case I would also consider the Swiss Travel Pass as it includes the Schilthorn excursion for free, and it is a more convenient pass too. You’ll find all details here:

For your trip to Venice you need a ticket from Domodossola (the border) to Venice: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy. Up until Domodossola you’ll travel for free with the Swiss Travel Pass or discounted with the Swiss Half Fare Card.

None of the passes work for bike rentals unfortunately.

Thank you. Looks like the Swiss Travel Pass is more worth it. However, I cannot find any trains from Lauterbrunnen to Domodossola, Italy for our dates of travel (Mid April) or even next week. If this route does not exist then it would not be worth it.

Also, any idea if Trummelbach falls is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass?

Are you looking at the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to find trains? You won’t be able to buy tickets yet but that is a major route.

If you have time think about going via Kandersteg for the best scenic trip.

Trummelbach Falls is not covered by STP but is around CHF11 from memory.

Found it on the SBB site. thank you!

Can you verify if the Swiss Travel Pass covers the cost of the cable car/tramway up the mountain to Murren? Will there be snow in Murren come mid April?

Yes the STP will get you to Mürren and even Schilthorn if you so desire. Make sure you understand what’s covered by studying the map you can download at http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity.

From Lauterbrunnen a very nice circuit to do is to Grütschalp (cable car), Mürren (train), Gimmelwald (cable car), Stechelberg (cable car), Lauterbrunnen (bus). With a side-trip to Schilthorn of course.
