Itinerary for Switzerland and Venice over 6 days

Short summary – read this first

Chinchub is planning a 6-day trip to Switzerland and Venice this December, arriving in Zurich and needing help with their itinerary. They want to explore Switzerland before heading to Venice but are unsure of the timing and whether they should skip Venice altogether given the tight schedule.

Key takeaways:
  • Use Swiss railways' timetable to plan travel between destinations and gauge travel times accurately.
  • Consider focusing solely on Switzerland since the itinerary is ambitious and there are only about 8 hours of daylight in December.
  • If you decide to keep Venice, adjust your itinerary to allow for at least one overnight stay to enjoy the city comfortably.
  • Checking weather conditions for December is crucial for planning, as some outdoor activities may be limited.

DAY 1: arriving late evening at zurich.

then we have DAY 2 through DAY7 (6days), in which we would like to travel to venice aswell.

DAY 8 we need to be back in zurich to catch our flight .

while planning my itenary, i get stuck at the point , from when/where i should plan to go to venice.

    would appreciate your kind suggestions.

    thanks in advance

    chinchub.

Hi chinchub and welcome to MySwissAlps!

When to move to Venice depends on what you want to see and do in Switzerland beforehand and how much time you want in Venice. I’m not sure I would try to visit Venice on such a short trip (and December isn’t probably the best time to visit Venice – though it is probably nice and quiet).

Do you know what you want to see/do in Switzerland? If not have a read here for ideas: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities

You can use the Swiss railways timetable to plan out trips around Switzerland and to/from Venice as well: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

For tickets to Italy look here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy/price and for rail pass options for Switzerland look here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses

Once you have an idea of where you want to go in Switzerland, post a rough itinerary here and we can help you refine it to make sure it can work as best as possible.

thank you Mr.Lucas for your kind reply to my query.

my rough itenery after going through the sites ,

DAY 1: arrive at zurich airport around 8.00pm . planning to take a train to lucerne from there and stay overnight at lucerne. i see there are trains to luceren every 50 minutes and the last train at 11.45.

DAY 2: after breakfast plan towards mt.titlis ,i see we have to go to engelberg from lucerne . i guess this Mt.titlis tour takes fairly the entire day.(pls correct me if am wrong).then later dinner at lake.

    stay overnight in lucerne

DAY 3:lucerene to interlaken. check in to hotel . golden pass line trip ,two lakes bridge or lake cruises ,spiz…

    overnight stay in interlaken

DAY 4:after breakfast ,Interlaken to grindelwald to jungrfraujoch

even free and easy or is there anything else to experience there?

    stay overnight in interlaken.

from here am stuck …shaky…not sure if am on the right path..

DAY 5: may be interlaken to zermatt .over night in zermatt

DAY 6: zermatt to st mortiz in glacier express . st.mortiz to venice. check into hotel at venice.

DAY 7: breakfast and venice day trip .(murano -burano-torcello boat ride). venice to zurich.

(is this possible on the same day pr should i stay over night to take the train to zurich the next day?)

    DAY 8: flight @ 3.45pm @zurich airport to flyout.

    is this very ambitiuos?

    am stuck at this point.

    * i havn’t touched on zurich part. look like rhine falls is the popular attraction.is it possible to visit during the december month.?

    * do lucerene needs one more day ? should i make lucerne 2 days and interlaken 1 day or vice versa or both 2 days?

*should i skip Venice ?. but i just need to visit the iconic place in venice. a day or 1 1/2 days is enough for me in venice. should i consider.

or alternatively do only switzerland ?

*i see, montreaux, lake geneva, zermatt, st,mortiz are possible in the itenary .but not sure on how to place it in case i drop the venice plan.

*my main concern is with respect to the weather. does my rough itenary holds good for the weather ?

*is there any other doable combo with switzerland as main ?

    * am open to any change or any other suggested itenary.

your thoughts will be very helpful.

    many thanks

    Hi Chinchub,

I recommend to check your itinerary against the timetable Lucas referred to. You’ll then get a feel for the amount of travel time, and how much time is left for sightseeing. Keep in mind that there’s only about 8 hours of daylight in December.

Day 6 is not possible, for example. Day 7 won’t be realistic either I’m afraid. Personally I’d skip Venice for this trip and focus on Switzerland. All the areas you’ll be passing through can keep you busy for at least a week (each, that is).
