    >> Can the upgrade be purchased via the SBB app/website as well, BTW, or only at a train station?

I’ve only just realised a very important limitation of buying class upgrades in the SBB App. It doesn’t know you have a Swiss Travel Pass, and will charge you the full difference between the 2nd class fare and the 1st class fare, instead of only half the difference.

In order to ensure that you don’t pay the full difference, you will need to buy the class upgrade at a staffed station, where you can show them your Swiss Travel Pass and get the discounted upgrade.

The upgrades I bought in the app were for short sectors, so although I paid more than I had to, it didn’t amount to a lot of money. If you did that with such a long sector as the Glacier Express though, you would pay substantially more than you needed to.

I am unable to update the other thread in which I explain how to do a class upgrade using the SBB App, as it is closed. Perhaps one of the moderators could advise me as to the best way of amending or deleting that thread to ensure that people don’t end up paying too much for their upgrades.

    Hi Alpenrose,

Thanks for letting us know. I didn’t think of that issue either. I added a note to the other thread. Even though I could have re-opened the thread, that would still not allow you to edit posts older than one hour. Feel free to let me know in case the note is incomplete or not clear.

We are also travelling to Switzerland in April 2017 (1st-14th). Facing the same issue of various train routes/locations being closed! 🙁

Actually I believe you should be ok – from what I understand, most places should be running as usual at least until after Easter, which is only on April 16 this year…

    Many thanks for that, Arno!
