Jungfrau Region in mid October- clothing advice

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to the Jungfrau region, specifically Murren, from October 18-19. They plan to visit Mount Schilthorn but are not taking the Jungfraujoch rail ride and seek advice on proper clothing for the trip. They want to know if their selected clothing items will be sufficient for the chilly weather.

Key takeaways:
  • Your clothing list is mostly suitable; a warm sweater combined with a raincoat might suffice instead of a winter jacket.
  • Thermal wear may not be necessary as October can be mild; focus on keeping your upper body warm.
  • Make sure to pack good hiking footwear and extra socks as they're essential for mountain areas.

    Hi

We will be visiting Jungfrau region (Murren,Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Kleine Sheidegg, Grindelwald) during 18-19 th of October. We will be staying in Murren. We hope to do Mount Schilthorn and will not be doing jungfraujoch rail ride. We appreciate some advice as to proper clothing. We are thinking of taking the following:

    -sweater

    -raincoat

    -beanie

    -thermal wear

    -hand gloves

    -additional socks

    -hiking shoes

Will they be sufficient for us? Will we need a winter jacket as well?

    thanks!

    Hello Xmistral99,

I think your list of clothing sounds quite perfect for that time of the year in the Jungfrau Region. If your sweater(s) is/are warm enough and you combine them with your raincoats, it will be like a winter jacket, so in order to avoid bringing too much luggage, I think that combo will work perfectly!

Thermal wear may be a bit too much for October. You might start to find it a bit too warm if the weather is good. I don’t normally wear thermal wear even in mid winter.

Concentrate on items for your top half as that is where you will feel the cold most.

Hiking footwaer and socks is a given for any time of year in the mountains
