Hi, I’m planning to go to Jungfraujoch on either 11/12 Dec. I understand we need to look at the forecast before buying tickets and need to buy few days before in case the tickers ran out. We will stay in Beatenberg area.

We have Swiss Half Fare card & already bought Saver Day Pass on that 2 dates (2 adults & 2 children). I understand that our travel cost is already covered until Wengen or Grindelwald.

I’m planning to go up via Lauterbrunnen – Kleine Scheidegg – Jungfraujoch, and to go down via Jungfraujoch – Eiger Express – Grindelwald, so we can enjoy different views going up and coming down, and can explore a little of both Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. I suppose this is what people normally do?

How to book this trip? I tried to go to the following site and get confused: http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/jungfraujoch-top-of-europe/buy-jungfraujoch-ticket/

If I choose “Lauterbrunnen”, it seems that I need to go down via Lauterbrunnen way too? How to specify that I want to go down via Grindelwald? And do we really need to choose the timing that we want to go down? As I don’t know how long I’ll spend at Jungfraujoch, so I prefer not to pre-choose what time I need to go down and instead, prefer to see on the day itself. If we are tired then we will go down.

Or is it better if I go up to Jungfraujoch & go down via Grindelwald Eiger Express both ways? If so, I might include Lauterbrunnen in my next day itinerary instead.

Currently our itinerary is as follow:

    11 Dec

    • Explore Lauterbrunnen village & waterfall (~1 hour)
    • Kleine Scheidegg & Jungfraujoch
    • Go down using Eiger Express
    • Explore Grindelwald

    12 Dec

    • Explore Murren
    • Gimmelwald
    • Toboggan around that area
    • Iseltwald (if have time)

    Thank you so much!

    Hi pipinana,

That’s great that you have secured your Swiss Half Fare Card and Saver Day Passes.

Yes, best not to book tickets too in advance until you’ve checked the weather forecast. You will be good to book a day in advance once you know the weather is fine.

Correct, there are several routes to reach Jungfraujoch, all are described in the below link.

Yes, you can combine different routes by going up one way and down another, for variety. However you are unable to buy this type of ticket online, you would need to do this physically at the train station.

Work with what suits your plans. Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are on ‘opposite’ sides of the valley, so I think it would make sense to plan your activities on the respective sides so you can make the most of your time there. Otherwise you could spend too much time getting from one place to another. Use the SBB timetable so you can research and gauge journey times.

Please note, Jungfraujoch tickets for after 10th December are not bookable online as yet, you will have to wait till the beginning of December (there will be a new timetable from this date).

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda,

Thanks for your reply. If I purchase from this link instead, it seems that it’s an “open time” ticket, means I can go up via Lauterbrunnen at my preferred timing, and go down via Eiger Express at my preferred timing : shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/?affiliateId=23&currency=CHF#/en/product/excursionJungfraujoch

Is that correct? This is the link that’s recommended by myswissalps.

For my 11 Dec itinerary, do you think if this is too rush? If it is, I might leave lauterbrunnen exploring to the next day instead:

    • Explore Lauterbrunnen village & waterfall (~1 hour)
    • Go to Jungfraujoch via Kleine Scheidegg
    • Go down using Eiger Express
    • Explore Grindelwald

And is “wengeralpbahn” a must see/do? Or is it alright to miss it if I’m going to & back via Grindelwald Eiger Express instead?

    Hi pipinana,

Yes, the roundtrip ticket to Jungfraujoch is valid on all routes. So for your onward journey you can travel via Wengen and return via Grindelwald if you wish.

It is possible to combine a trip to Jungfraujoch with sightseeing activities in Wengen and Lauterbrunnen on the same day. My personal suggestion would be to allocate the morning to Jungfraujoch and travel via Grindelwald. Later, return via Wengen and Lauterbrunnen so you can stop at these destinations for sightseeing.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

    Thanks for your reply.

So that means even if I purchase ticket at Jungfrau website, where the ticket is supposed to be to & from Grindelwald via Eiger Express (both ways), I can still choose to go back via Lauterbrunnen & Wengen instead with that tickets?

Thanks for your suggestion, yes I might travel via Grindelwald & return via Wengen & Lauterbrunnen instead, so not too rush in Lauterbrunnen. I suppose there’s lesser to see in Grindelwald than Lauterbrunnen? 😉

    Hi pipinana,

Personally I find it more convenient to purchase the discounted ticket to Jungfraujoch from the Switzerland Travel Centre website.

You can find more information about Grindelwald here: http://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwald. It’s a slightly bigger village with more shops and amenities than Wengen and Lauterbrunnen.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Anna
