Jungfraujoch tickets for different routes up/down (Swiss Travel Pass)

Short summary – read this first

Nick is planning a visit to Jungfraujoch while staying in Wengen and wants to know if he can take different routes for the ascent and descent. He plans to go up via Wengen - Kleine Scheidegg and return via the Eiger Express gondola to Grindelwald, but is unsure if this is allowed with his ticket booking.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take different routes for ascent and descent to Jungfraujoch; both options are valid with the ticket.
  • Always check if your pass covers specific routes to avoid extra charges; this can enhance your trip.
  • When booking, use official sites for the best ticket options, especially for passes like the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Hello,

From what I have gathered you can book the Jungfraujoch ticket from the Swiss Railways website or from the Jungfraujoch website. It costs CHF 151 thru the Swiss Railways site and CHF 150.20 thru the Jungfraujoch website. Both with Swiss Travel Pass. No biggie as it’s just less that CHF 1 difference and my question is not about this CHF 1 difference- LOL.

My question is can you ascent and descent using a different route? We will be staying in Wengen so to ascent we will take the Wengen – Kleine Scheidegg route and on the way back we plan to take the Eiger Express gondola going to Grindelwald. When I try booking from the Jungfraujoch website the ascent and descent routes are the same – see attached image Jungfraujoch online ticket.jpg but in the FAQ section it says you can use different route.

The Swiss Railways website has this statement posted: The Jungfraujoch ticket entitles you to a return ticket to the Jungfraujoch. You can take the cogwheel railway from Grindelwald/Wengen to the Jungfraujoch or take the Eiger Express gondola. But again it’s not clear if different route is permitted. See attached image STC Jungfraujoch.jpg for reference.

I haven’t gone thru the buy process yet as we are planning to buy the tickets on the day we visit due to weather condition. Maybe that option will be presented during the checkout process?

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

    Nick

    Hi Nikolaus,

There are a lot of websites where you can buy Jungfraujoch tickets. You’ll find a list here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/#tickets.

The tickets sold by Switzerland Travel Centre/SBB are what you are looking for. This is the link: https://www.myswissalps.com/link/stc-jungfraujoch/. They allow any of the 3 routes up and down; whether it’s the same up and down or different ones does not matter.

    Have fun!

Arno, we are undecided about whether to visit Jungfraujoch in October when we are there.  If we did decide to I was planning on simply buying a ticket from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch on the SBB app.  We will have a Half Fare Card and a BO Pass.  I was then going to buy another from Jungfraujoch to Kleine Scheidegg for the return journey.

Will this be okay, or do I have to buy at one of those listed in your post?

    Hi DebH,

You can buy there too. Any legit site/app is ok, but some sites do not sell all types of tickets so that might limit your options a bit. SBB may not offer the discount for the Berner Oberland Pass, for example. In rare cases, you’re stuck with buying on the spot.

By the way: if you have a valid Berner Oberland Pass that day, there is no need for a return ticket to Kleine Scheidegg, because Eigergletscher to Kleine Scheidegg is included. Please see the map: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/berner-oberland-pass/#downloads

    Enjoy the ride!

Thanks Arno.  I will have a BO pass, which includes Eigergletscher (sp?), so my plan was to buy a ticket on SBB from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch, then on return from Jungfraujoch to Kleine Scheidegg.  From KS onwards I believe that is all included with the  BO pass, is that correct?

    Hi DebH,

With the Berner Oberland Pass, all you need is a connecting ticket from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch (the ticket is valid for a return trip (Eigergletscher – Jungfraujoch – Eigergletscher). There is no need to purchase an additional ticket to Kleine Scheidegg as this is covered by the Berner Oberland Pass.

You can view and download the Berner Oberland Pass map here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/berner-oberland-pass/#downloads

Anna, we want to go the two different ways though, just to experience as many different types of travel and scenery as we possibly can.

I know that Kleine Scheidegg is covered, but I assume I need to pay from Jungfraujoch to there.

    Hi DebH,

There are 3 ways to travel to Jungfraujoch.

For example, if you are starting from Interlaken Ost:

Option 1 – Travel by train to Eigergletscher via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg (free with Berner Oberland Pass). You need a connecting ticket for the last stretch to Jungfraujoch.

Option 2 – Travel by train to Eigergletscher via Grindelwald (free with Berner Oberland Pass). You need a connecting ticket for the last stretch to Jungfraujoch.

Option 3 – Travel by train to Grindelwald Terminal and Eiger Express gondola to Eigergletscher (free with Berner Oberland Pass. You need a connecting ticket for the last stretch to Jungfraujoch.

You can combine any of the above for ascent and descent.

You can find useful info on how to plan your journey to the Jungfraujoch here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/#directions

In case you need more info, please have a look at this video, in which Arno explains the routes in detail: https://youtu.be/CD9Y7R_a9z0?si=L5DjhTd0tZ5xYV0_

    Best regards,

    Anna

    Hi DebH,

No need for guesswork! What’s covered by the pass can be found on the map that Anna referred to. So be sure not to pay for what’s included. Better buy an ice cream or a rösti for that money 😉

Thanks everyone.  I could look at that map of the BO Pass all day!

I think I was confused thinking there was a way up from Kleine Scheidegg that didn’t go to Eigergletscher, but it seems I was wrong, not for the first time.

My plan is to go via the Eiger Express gondola one way, and coming back get the train from Kleine Scheidegg straight to Wengen.  There would be no need to return to Grindelwald on the Eiger Express.

So all I would need to purchase on the SBB app is two return tickets Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch, is that correct?

    Thanks once again.

    Hi DebH,

That’s correct, you only need the return tickets from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch.

    Anna

    Hi Arno,

I’m so grateful that you shared the link to book tickets to jaunfrauch via different routes.

I suppose this is the link:

    https://www.myswissalps.com/link/stc-jungfraujoch/

But I have some doubts , if you don’t mind clarifying.

I will be travelling in October with my family( 2 kids included- 12 years and 6 years).

We have already booked the swiss travel pass along with swiss family cards for our kids( which says our kids travel for free).

So during booking our tickets through the above link, do we need to book for our kids too?

Also are the seat reservations included in the above bookings? If not, then where can that be done for both the routes.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Chandan,

With the Swiss Family Card, both your children can travel along for free even on routes that are only discounted (for example mountain excursions): see https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/discount/. So you will only need to purchase 2 tickets (for you and your wife).

The excursion ticket to Jungfraujoch does not include seat reservation. Seat reservation is usually not necessary but possible. You can pay extra for priority boarding/seat reservation, which can be purchased online from the official Jungfrau Railway website. See https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/ (scroll down to Other Websites of Interest for the link)

    Regards,

    Anna

Hi Deb, you’d best not buy your return tickets Eigergletscher-Jungfraujoch in the SBB app. You can’t choose the appropriate discount you’re entitled to with your Berner Oberland Pass there. You can only pick either full-fare or 50% off. The ticket you need is for sale elsewhere online, or on the spot.

Annika, the tickets for Eigergletscher-Jungfraujoch in the SBB app come in at 63 CHF return, which seems even less than the connecting ticket talked about on the BO Website.

It is just a nice easy way for me to buy them on the day of if we decide to go.

    Hi DebH,

That sounds like the ticket for Swiss Half Fare Card holders. That’s fine if that’s what you need. If you would need the ticket for Berner Oberland Pass holders, then you can’t buy it that way, that’s what Annika means. The SBB app is primarily for Swiss residents and does not offer all the options for tourists.

Arno, I will have the BO Pass, but will also have the Tourist Half Fare Card.  Will I be okay buying those tickets in this case?

Sure, if you have a Swiss Half Fare Card you can buy half fare tickets. Whether or not you also have other passes does not matter.

Enjoy the ride and the views from both Eigergletscher and Kleine Scheidegg!

Thank you Arno.  We are still completely undecided whether we will even be bothered going to Jungfraujoch.  It will depend on time and weather and which other mountains we’ve managed to see before we even get to Wengen.

It’s just good to know that if we get up, have a clear day and decide to go, I can buy the tickets in the app over breakfast.

    Thanks again.

    Hi DebH,

Right, if you also have a Swiss Half Fare Card, then of course you can buy a 50% discounted ticket. As for deciding whether or not to go: also check webcams showing the views from Jungfraujoch. Together with weather forecasts, they’ll help you decide if it’s worth it. Have fun either way :-)!
